The position is remote Monday-Friday. This is subject to change at any time based on business needs.

Position Summary:

Accurately translates system-wide hospital documents from English into a target language as requested. Ensures linguistic and cultural integrity. Included in the incumbent’s scope of work is patient letters, discharge instructions, official UMMMC forms and documents, public signage, patient medical records.

Serves as a medical interpreter for patients and staff and supports the operations of the department, interpreting in the consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes. Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all office and hospital policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent, passing performance of competencies listed in the IMIA Standards of Practice, and the Code of Ethics. Also assists department with on-the-job training and mentoring of interpreter internships.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for translating documents from English to target languages system-wide for UMass Memorial.
  • Ensures meaning and context of the material are maintained, and converts it into a second language, making sure to preserve the original meaning.
  • Creates glossaries or term dictionaries.
  • Proofreads and edits documents translated by external translation companies to ensure grammatically correct and true translations of the original documents. Gives final approval after graphic design team has laid out documents.
  • Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately.

Position Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and/or Translation and Interpreting Studies, or minimum of two years’ experience in the field of medical translations.


  • American Translators Association (ATA) certification.


  • Exceptional fluency in English and the target language, both oral and written.
  • Strong understanding of grammar.
  • Solid knowledge of Medical Terminology in at least two languages.
  • Strong organizational, attention to detail, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in use of keyboard/typing using word processing and spreadsheet software (speed and accuracy). Experience and knowledge of computer software for word-processing, database management, etc. Demonstrate proficiency in use of editing and formatting options included in word processing software.
  • Ability to learn/use other software related to translations, such as Adobe Acrobat
  • Self-motivated with ability to meet deadlines.
