Position Summary:

The Director of Arctic Indigenous-led Conservation will advance Ocean Conservancy’s growing body of work supporting Indigenous-led conservation in Alaska. Working as an integral member of the Arctic team, the Director will develop and implement strategies to advance marine and coastal conservation in support of Tribal and Indigenous organizations’ priorities in the Arctic and throughout Alaska.

The Director will work to deepen and expand partnerships, identify new opportunities, and participate on Ocean Conservancy’s behalf on collaborative efforts and coalitions. In this role, the Director will be part of the Arctic Program’s leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be based in Alaska and will have access to reliable internet. Ocean Conservancy provides financial support for internet connectivity. This is a full-time position with flexible hours.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities for Ocean Conservancy to support the advancement of Indigenous-led marine and coastal conservation in Alaska.
  • In collaboration with the Arctic team, develop and implement strategies to achieve marine and coastal conservation in Alaska through the advancement of Tribal and Indigenous organizations’ priorities.
  • Develop, expand and maintain relationships with key partners, including Alaska Tribes and consortia, Indigenous leaders, Alaska communities, government representatives, Alaska Native Organizations, and other NGOs.
  • Participate on behalf of Ocean Conservancy in collaborative efforts and coalitions to advance Indigenous-led conservation in Alaska.
  • Participate in the development and execution of internal and external communications materials and strategies.
  • Represent Ocean Conservancy in select federal and state decision-making bodies, at conferences and meetings related to Alaska marine conservation and Indigenous-led conservation.
  • Coordinate with Ocean Conservancy’s Ocean Justice program and other relevant programs to develop connections with and support Indigenous-led conservation efforts outside of Alaska.
  • In conjunction with Arctic program and development staff, assist in the preparation of relevant grant reports and proposals and other communications with existing or prospective funders.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience working with Alaska Native peoples and organizations and rural communities.
  • Experience successfully building and working in coalitions.
  • Strategic thinking and ability to identify, maximize, and create opportunities to advance Ocean Conservancy’s policy goals.
