Analytical Scientist 🔥

Are you an analytical chemist focused on bringing sustainable ingredients to market? Are you looking for an opportunity to build your assay development and material characterization skills? Help scale fermentation-derived small molecule products from the bench to manufacturing by becoming an essential part of our product development pipeline in Emeryville.

The Process Analytical Chemistry team is looking for an analytical scientist with a track record of excellence in modern chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (HPLC, GC-FID/MS, NMR, IC, LCMS). The successful candidate will collaborate with product purification process development and manufacturing teams to develop methods for small molecule analysis and to identify impurities in finished products and process intermediates. We are looking for energetic, highly motivated analytical chemists who meet complex challenges with creative thinking while working closely with process scientists and engineers, other analytical chemists, fermentation scientists, and strain engineers to help Amyris deliver “No Compromise” products derived from sugarcane.

Responsibilities:

    • Develop methods of analysis to determine product purity and concentration of critical impurities
    • Evaluate method performance in process samples that may differ greatly in composition, and compare to acceptance criteria determined collaboratively with project teams
    • Identify critical impurities, either using online methods or through isolation and offline analysis
    • Collaborate with project teams using multi-disciplinary approaches and/or cross-departmental resources to provide rapid, fit-for-purpose data allowing process scientists and engineers to evaluate candidate processes quickly and accurately
    • Communicate with internal stakeholders through reports and presentations, and represent the team’s work and perspective to external groups
    • Evaluate new technologies and methods and implement when appropriate
    • Prepare and review SOPs and technical reports
    • Maintain individual and team safety as the highest priority and promote a positive culture of adhering to EHS and lab safety guidelines.

Qualifications:

    • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 0 – 5 years of relevant industry experience, or equivalent
    • Hands-on experience developing quantitative chromatographic methods for GC, LC, IC, and titrations
    • Experience in small molecule identification and structure elucidation using prep-scale chromatography, LC/GC-MS, and NMR.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are essential for success in this role, as are strong organizational and time management skills
    • Ability to present research results in both written and oral form to colleagues, managers, and outside collaborators in a clear, concise, and effective way
    • Experience working in a process development or manufacturing development context preferred
    • Knowledge of statistics and experience with data analysis tools like SQL, JMP, Spotfire, R, Python, and Minitab a plus
    • Embrace Amyris Core Values
    • Follow Amyris Safety Policies and Procedures
