Research Scientist 🔥

The Role:

Newsela’s Research Scientist will tap into their inner history buff or political junky to deliver research insights that power improvements in learning outcomes for millions of Newsela users. As a key member of Newsela’s newly formed Learning department reporting to the Director of Impact Research, you’ll make major contributions to ongoing Newsela learning science research initiatives and help set the long-term vision for a program of research focused on Newsela’s Social Studies product. You’ll leverage your mixed-methods program evaluation skills to design and execute a robust portfolio of research projects, including implementation studies, efficacy, summative, or outcomes evaluations, and a slew of secondary data analysis projects.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

Your work will inform the direction and characterize the impact of a product transforming K-12 education. Broadly, social studies has received considerably less learning science research attention than many other academic subjects, leaving a lot to be discovered in terms of best practices for supporting student learning. In this role, you’ll not only shape social studies instructional strategy at Newsela but generate learning science insights informing broader understanding of digital learning and social studies instruction.

Why We’ll Love You:

You are a PhD-trained researcher (or have comparable experience) with some degree of expertise in K-12 education (generally or educational technology specifically) and a social studies field like History, Civics, Economics, Politics, and Geography. You are an empathetic and astute interviewer and observer with strong qualitative data analysis skills who can uncover what’s going well for teachers and students and where there is room to enhance learning experiences. You may not necessarily identify as a quantitative researcher, but you’re able to design and execute experimental studies with nested data structures (students within classes within schools within school systems). You’re able to translate key findings and challenges into actionable recommendations for a variety of audiences - skillfully code-switching between technical and non-technical language to communicate with cross-functional stakeholders across Newsela’s product, sales, marketing, and other departments, as well as with external audiences (e.g., school district administration).

About Newsela:

One of the fastest growing tech companies in K-12 education, Newsela was founded on the principle that while every child may have unique learning preferences, they all deserve a rich learning experience that ignites a love of learning.
