PS: Peek just made the 2021 Forbes America's Best Startups Employer list [1]!
Peek’s engineering team takes pride in balancing the fast pace of a startup with the needs of a mature B2B SaaS software development business. Our total downtime in 2020 was 4 minutes, yet we ship several times a week. We continue to invest in cutting-edge technology and are not afraid of taking on big tech-debt projects: our tech stack has evolved from Ruby on Rails and MongoDB on AWS seven years ago, to an SOA on Elixir and Phoenix with Postgres on Docker + Kubernetes on AWS and GCP. Our frontend code is a single-page app in Ember.js and we also develop native mobile iOS apps with a big push to switch our codebase to SWIFT.

The Role:

  • We are hiring a DevOps Engineer: someone who is passionate about infrastructure-as-code, accelerating development and deployment processes, increasing reliability, and scaling our platform as our company grows.
  • The key skills we’re looking for are oriented around deploying and maintaining complex service architectures with the Google Cloud Platform – particularly Kubernetes (GKE). We also rely on some AWS services, notably RDS and Route53.
  • The ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience in DevOps, including familiarity with Terraform, Pulumi, NGINX, Helm, and ArgoCD. We handle PII, so familiarity with pragmatic data protection and network security practices is important. Bonus points if you enjoy building playbooks and teaching others.
  • This is an on-call position, and will occasionally require you to work outside of normal business hours. We are committed to working with you to keep a healthy and balanced schedule.
  • Our team is 100% remote, however, we prefer candidates in the same time zones as the greater United States (UTC-10 to UTC-4). English is our business language, and fluency is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Own all aspects of 24/7 production data-center operations.
  • Create robust automated solutions using infrastructure-as-code.
  • Deploy and administer high profile web applications and underlying services.
  • Lead technology initiatives including the use of containers (Docker, Kubernetes, GKE) that drive scalability and reliability.
  • Ensure proper security, monitoring, alerting and reporting for the infrastructure.
  • Improve the performance of our web applications and solve scaling issues.
  • Use, test, update, and create documentation for production services.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience with large-scale, high-availability, asynchronous, distributed systems; experience deploying & managing service-oriented architectures a plus
  • Experience operating Kubernetes in a production environment
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code systems, preferably Terraform or Pulumi.
  • Must have 2+ years of advanced experience with Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud Platform management. This includes but is not limited to Route53, IAM security, VPC, Security Groups, RDS.
  • Experience with monitoring/reporting technologies (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic, etc).
  • Deep knowledge of networking (routers/switches, load balancing, DNS, VPN, TLS, etc)
  • Experience with source control and build systems (Git/GitHub, Jenkins, Codefresh, ArgoCD, etc)
  • Experience using NGINX for routing of production web traffic

Personal Attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills: we work collaboratively to solve problems, and value team success over individual achievement. We love working with people who can ask hard questions, offer unusual solutions, and are willing to compromise when solving challenging problems on a deadline.
  • Comfortable working remotely: we are 100% remote, and rely on Slack, email, Signal, and Zoom to stay connected.
  • Well organized and self-motivated: we work in a fast-paced environment, our teams are growing, and our priorities shift on a quarterly basis as we move into new markets.
  • Advocate for self care while managing a high workload: we want you to show up as your best self, and to speak up for what you need to stay healthy and engaged.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Work on a computer an average of six hours per day
  • Extended periods of concentration
  • Ability to speak in front of groups of people via Zoom
  • Frequent communication (Internal – 90%; External – 10%) (written / verbal)
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time

Benefits:

  • United Healthcare PPO or HSA options
  • Monthly Work from Home Allowance
  • Monthly Health and Wellness Allowance
  • 10-days of accrued PTO annually
  • 2-weeks paid company holiday recharge break in December at Christmas
  • 8-additional paid company holidays
  • 401k with company match
