Job Description

This position will play a key role in unlocking opportunities to engage and support our team and promote our organizational culture while we build and deliver services that reflect the uniqueness of the organizations and communities we serve. A newly created position, the Head of People and Culture (HPC) will be a crucial member of the executive team. Reporting to the President & CEO, they will be responsible for the strategic direction and management of human resources for the organization. The HPC will be key to creating a meaningful and people-first culture with an emphasis on ensuring the advancement of inclusive practices that engage a diverse team of professionals and high-level volunteers. This role will be critical as we continue to transform our organization, culture and mission!

The HPC should bring a thorough understanding of human resources management and serve as the content expert for matters relating to employment and labor laws, compliance, compensation, payroll, benefits, DEI and employee relations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and develops People strategies which impact and enhance the organization including organizational culture, morale, retention, recruitment, orientation and onboarding, performance management, workforce development and succession planning
  • Thoughtfully supports and facilitates conversations, meetings, presentations, etc. to build understanding, roll out key initiatives and advance the organization’s important culture and values
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organizational goals and strategy related to all areas of People, Culture and DEI
  • Counsels and advises Taproot employees (“Roots”) on a wide variety of sensitive personnel issues (e.g., development, hiring, promotions, leave, etc.) to support effective conversations and for the purpose of assisting in effective decision making and enforcing all relevant policies, procedures, and employment laws
  • Guides and oversees the strategic direction of Taproot’s DEI initiatives, including overall organizational advancement in anti-racism, gender equality, accessibility and belonging
  • Provides expertise and guidance regarding organizational changes to build trust and gain buy-in by Roots
  • Develops succession planning and cross-training plans to ensure the long-term success of the organization
  • Oversees the administration of Taproot’s Total Rewards benefit Program, ensuring that employee understanding and continued improvement of recognition, reward and investment opportunities over time
  • Oversees processing of all claims and paperwork related to workers compensation, disability, FMLA, and other legal requirements
  • Responsible for retirement plan compliance and effectiveness
  • Oversees the important annual performance evaluation process, providing guidance and coaching to Root Managers, ensuring new supervisors are trained on organizational process and priority to ensure the annual performance program is a great experience for everyone
  • Identifies and executes best practices in engagement and people and culture management
  • Ensures organizational policies, procedures and handbook are kept updated, reflecting changes in laws and Roots’ comprehensive needs
  • Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance
  • 12+ years of experience in Human Resources with demonstrated progressive advancement
  • 3+ years of experience supervising staff
  • 3+ years of experience leading DEI efforts
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional conversational, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong background in the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion with demonstrated involvement in building (upon) a program and driving towards systemic change
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organizations HRIS and talent management systems
  • Experience working in a nonprofit environment a plus

Base salary starting at $120,000 annually; open to negotiation and adjustment subject to geographic region
