Position Summary:

The Arc of the United States seeks an experienced Grant Writer to manage institutional grant proposals for the organization. This role will manage the full grant function beginning with proposal kick off meetings, organizing deadlines with program staff to writing and submission and grant reporting of grants less than $50,000. Additionally, they will serve as a support to their mentor in all aspects of proposals in the amount of $50,000 or more. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer who pays close attention to details and is forward thinking, with an ability to communicate with teams across the organization to create a streamlined and successful grant management program. The Manager must be able to work independently and prioritize their own work with minimal support from their mentor. The Manager is ultimately responsible for achieving deadlines and assuring the quality and accuracy of all proposals submitted on behalf of The Arc. 

 

Reporting to the Senior Director and Vice President of Institutional Giving, the Manager will spend the majority of their time managing the grant application process and reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and demonstrate strong skills in teamwork and a commitment to improving the lives of those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and their families. The Arc is located in Washington, DC but we are open to recruiting a remote staff person for this position to recruit the best talent with the condition that the employee must work east coast business hours.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of concept papers, letters of inquiry and proposals to corporations, foundations, and government agencies in support of The Arc’s initiatives, for both program funds and general operating funds up to $50,000.
  • Support the Senior Director and Vice President for Institutional Giving as needed for grants of $50,000 or greater.
  • Create and maintain a collection of approved written descriptions of each of The Arc’s program areas so they can be quickly utilized to put together concept papers and proposals.
  • Manage RFP development process from early strategy and creative thinking meetings, to coordinating the proposal process across the organization, to ensuring successful budget development, letter of interest development, procurement of supplemental materials, the creation of the final proposal product, and its delivery to the funder.
  • Develop proposal concepts and proposal products, and stewarding relationships with funders during and beyond the proposal process.
  • Ensure a successful review of the final draft of all proposals and related products and oversees their delivery to funders.
  • Collaborate with mentor and Team Leads on grant management and stewardship activities, including reporting for general operating support grants, meetings with funders, and continuation applications.
  • Manage National Corporate Sponsorship portfolio and solicitation of sponsorships and then ensure benefits are delivered per agreements.
  • Write artfully, tactfully and concisely with a particular flair for communicating clearly about complex and often misunderstood programs and needs of the disability community.
  • Learn about many facets of serving and supporting the IDD community in order to write thoughtful and insightful proposals on a multitude of subjects (and often with limited time to learn about areas of academic and regulatory complexity).
  • Provide technical assistance on proposal development to state chapters of The Arc and to engage them in the development and implementation of grant-funded projects.
  • Serve as an internal partner and resource to teams around the organization, especially program teams.
  • Develop relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Specific educational background in writing or a graduate degree are strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of grant writing experience.
  • Track record of successfully writing, submitting and winning federal, corporate and foundation grants.
  • Exceptional writing skills with an eye for adjusting and editing language and tone for consistency.
  • Proficient with Microsoft and Google products.
  • Excellent knowledge of fundraising and grant making information resources.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and well organized.
  • Must be able to effectively manage their priority list and adjust rapidly as needed.
  • Must be able to work closely with mentor and accept both praise and constructive feedback
  • Ability to multi-task in an ever-changing environment while adjusting priorities and still meeting deadlines.
  • Experienced in developing and interpreting budgets.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment as well as autonomously to meet fundraising goals. 
  • Must have the ability and willingness to travel nationally when required. 
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to and a passion for the work of The Arc.
