This job is through the Hollywood Homeless Youth Partnership, a partner of Safe Place for Youth.
Scope of Work The Hollywood Homeless Youth Partnership is a strategic alliance of eight youth-serving agencies working to prevent and reduce homelessness among youth and young adults in Hollywood, CA through: 1) Service Impact; 2) Training and Capacity Building; 3) Research and Evaluation; and 4) Policy and Advocacy.
The agencies of the HHYP provide a full continuum of care including outreach, drop-in, emergency shelter, transitional living, supportive apartments, mental/ physical health, substance abuse treatment, life skills, and education/employment services.
The member agencies of the HHYP include Aviva Family.

The agencies of the HHYP provide a full continuum of care including outreach, drop-in, emergency shelter, transitional living, supportive apartments, mental/ physical health, substance abuse treatment, life skills, and education/employment services. The member agencies of the HHYP include Aviva Family & Children’s Services, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Covenant House California, LA LGBT Center, My Friend’s Place, Step Up, and Youth Emerging Stronger. We have one partner agency, Safe Place for Youth, located in Venice, CA.

Project Objectives

In an effort to build public awareness around youth homelessness, cultivate champions of change among policy makers and system leaders, and re-energize the focus on youth homelessness, the HHYP is developing an advocacy campaign from an equity lens and centers BIPOC and LGBTQ+ unhoused young people. We are looking for a policy consultant who will guide us in developing a policy platform, implementing our strategies, and activating our network.

Tasks

The potential tasks include the following:

  • Track and analyze local and state legislation, county policies, and funding opportunities that
  • affect young people experiencing homelessness and youth services providers
  • Provide a monthly policy briefing to the HHYP Steering Committee about legislation
  • impacting young people experiencing homelessness and youth service providers and
  • advising the HHYP about what position to take
  • Engage with key stakeholders and identify and cultivate allies among local elected officials,
  • government agencies, and youth leaders
  • Draft and present public comment and advocacy letters on behalf of the HHYP; provide
  • talking points about relevant issues
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with elected officials and candidates about youth
  • homelessness
  • Work in collaboration with Steering Committee, Partnership Manager and Systems Change
  • workgroup to develop and execute advocacy strategies and a policy platform that support
  • our goals
  • Activate agency staff and stakeholders to engage in advocacy opportunities
  • Assist the HHYP in identifying relevant tables to be at and advocate for appointments to
  • boards and commissions

Time period

This work would take place from January 2022-December 2022. We will pay a monthly retainer and anticipate the work may take up to 20 hours per month.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate is an experienced policy advocate or community organizer with expertise in LA County and City homeless policy and a deep understanding of local systems that young people experiencing homelessness have contact with. This person would have existing relationships with elected officials and deep knowledge of local politics. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and young people with lived experience of homelessness. The preferred candidate will have experience, lived and/or professional, addressing youth homelessness.
