Senior Writer & Content Specialist 🔥


States United Democracy Center, a nonpartisan organization focused on the critical role states play in election protection, is hiring a Senior Writer & Content Specialist. This position will support States United’s growing Communications Department, which includes staff and consultants focused on earned, paid, and digital media. The Senior Writer & Content Specialist will report to the Communications Director and work closely with the organization’s executive team, policy, legal, and research departments.

The Senior Writer & Content Specialist will be a creative thinker who can convert complex issues into simple and compelling content that communicates a clear message to a wide range of stakeholders. This position is ideal for someone who has an established background in editorial writing and research for high-profile media outlets. This position will be integral to the positioning of the organization ahead of the 2022 and 2024 election cycles.

About the Organization: 

States United Democracy Center/States United Action is a new and growing nonpartisan organization advancing free, fair, and secure elections. We focus on connecting state officials, law enforcement leaders, and pro-democracy partners across America with the tools and expertise they need to safeguard our democracy. States United engages in legal and policy actions to protect our elections and democracy. During the 2020 election, then as the Voter Protection Program, we quickly became a go-to resource for state leaders, the press, and partner organizations. By bringing together current and former governors, secretaries of state, attorneys general, and law enforcement leaders for the first time, we helped build a nonpartisan firewall against those trying to undermine democracy.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Convert complex legal and policy issues into simple, compelling messages for key stakeholders, including organizational leadership;
  • Write and/or edit written materials, such as press releases, op-eds, reports, memos, newsletters, talking points, social media posts, and presentations;
  • Support the profile growth for organizational leadership, including identifying opportunities for elevating leaders/the organization, drafting supporting prep materials, and maintaining relationships with key partners; 
  • Create original and creative approaches & angles to further organizational priorities in the media landscape and with key stakeholders;
  • Support the development of an editorial calendar and editorial review process;
  • Copyedit documents and collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure materials are factually accurate while maintaining narrative appeal;
  • Support press outreach and build relationships with reporters and relevant issue-area influencers; and
  • Work to ensure consistent branding of materials across all platforms and adherence to State United’s style guide.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience in communications work with a proven track record of executing high quality work in a campaign-like environment, including a minimum of 5+ years in journalism or other writing-centric field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to distill and communicate complex policy ideas in a clear, understandable and relatable manner for a variety of audiences.
  • Project management experience in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to acting on the belief that bipartisanship is a critical component of our work.
  • Ability to proactively collaborate with colleagues in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability.
