We have an opening for a part-time position to help Colorado become a national leader in climate action.

Location: Metro Denver and surrounding areas (Commerce City, Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Lakewood, Englewood, Littleton)

Job Description:

350 Colorado’s mission is to work locally to help build the global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis and transition to a sustainable future. Science and social justice demand that we radically change the way our society contemplates, develops, and uses energy if we are to avert catastrophic global climate change. It’s clear that life as we know it is in peril due to climate change and that future generations and those least responsible for causing climate change will bear the brunt of the impacts. We believe that organized grassroots people power is the only way we can expect to counter the influence of the fossil fuel industry in our society. 350 Colorado is dedicated to achieving three primary organizational goals: Movement Building, Keeping Fossil Fuels in the Ground, and Promoting Local Solutions.

350 Colorado is hiring a community organizer to aid in the growth and success of our 350 Denver team and climate organizing in the Denver metro area of Colorado. The state capital is a key battleground in our climate action efforts! The 350 Denver organizer will recruit, train, and engage volunteers in climate action both at the local and statewide level.

Status: Contract position, part-time

Reports to: Movement Building & Volunteer Director (and secondarily to our Executive Director)

Essential Functions:

  • Movement building:
  • Grow local team membership and the local climate movement by recruiting new volunteers and engaging them in both local and statewide climate action, depending on their interests. Each local team coordinator will aim to recruit, engage, and retain at least 5 new local team members each month and 1 new leadership council member each month until an ideal number of leadership council members are reached.
  • Support the local team leadership council (e.g by facilitating monthly planning calls) in planning and organizing regular meetings and events to recruit new members and engage existing members.
  • Seek out and participate in local outreach opportunities, such as events that your team can have a table at in order to engage the community in campaign opportunities and recruit new members to sign petitions and get involved.
  • Widely publicize and promote (via social media, community calendars, radio interviews, flyers, ads, etc.) all team events and meetings to increase participation.
  • Host and facilitate grassroots organizing leadership trainings for local residents to help volunteers step up the ladder of engagement and establish a strong network of volunteer leaders.
  • Track numbers of participants and leadership committee members at each meeting, training and event, and report on tracking documents.
  • Help to plug volunteers into various roles and tasks, based upon team needs and volunteers’ interests and expertise.
  • Campaign coordination and leadership:
  • Plan and co-lead outreach and education events on climate issues for the local community.
  • Strengthen and develop new partnerships with other nonprofit organizations to create a robust coalition for climate action locally.
  • Grow the local climate movement by significantly increasing recruitment of participants, and meaningfully engage, coordinate and delegate campaign roles and responsibilities to volunteers and check in with them to support and maximize volunteer retention.
  • Promote the team’s activities both through social media and traditional media - via efforts to get media coverage, e.g. from press releases, press conferences, letters to the editor, opinion editorials, and postings in events calendars (online, radio and print). Ideally 4-6 press hits per team per year.
  • Local Team Coordinators can expect to spend approximately 10% of time supporting statewide efforts and about 90% of time supporting local team efforts.
  • Assist with fundraising (approximately 5% of your time):
  • Monthly giving donor recruitment goal of 10 additional monthly donors per team by end of year.
  • Local team coordinators will write 2 grants per year, with assistance from 350CO’s Development Director.
  • Participation in 350CO’s mid- and end-of-year fundraisers - supporting via emails, phonebanking, social media, etc.
  • Support local team fundraising efforts to cover the costs of events, materials, supplies and other needs that arise.
  • Lead your team in strategic planning toward the above goals, at least once per year (and ideally every 6 months), and track progress toward goals to report at least monthly.

In Denver we will focus on:

  • Educating the local community on how to take action on climate change and support statewide efforts for a rapid, just transition off fossil fuels and toward renewable energy solutions, e.g. through local and state policies.
  • Specific focus on transportation rule-making in Denver by pushing for more public transit options that run on electric power
  • Support frontline efforts to shut down the Suncor refinery through a just transition
  • Support and amplify other Denver-based efforts to engage the public in pro-climate policy making and actions, such as at the state Capitol
  • Promoting divestment from fossil fuels, especially pressuring the Federal Reserve to promote policies to encourage banks to stop financing fossil fuel companies and projects

Required qualifications:

  • Must live in the Denver Metro area.
  • Excellent team player, with strong leadership and volunteer management abilities.
  • Understand 350CO’s JEDI principles [1] and have a demonstrated understanding of the role that inequity plays in our society and in movement-building, and have demonstrated an ability to effectively manage across differences.
  • Understanding and implementation of strategic planning & campaign execution.
  • Deep commitment and passion for climate and social justice organizing.
  • Good comprehension of the geographic and cultural landscape of Denver/Colorado.
  • Solid verbal and written communication and follow-through skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with little direct supervision.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to inspire, motivate and delegate to others.
  • Social media proficiency.
  • Willingness to learn customer relationship management software (database, email, fundraising system) and Wordpress website maintenance.
