Communications Director

Summary: Make the Road PA (MRPA) seeks a motivated and talented Communications

Director.

Location: This person can be based in Philadelphia, Allentown, or Reading, PA, but will need to travel on a regular basis. Make the Road PA was launched in 2014 and, over the last few years, has quickly become one of the largest Latinx organizations in the state of Pennsylvania. MRPA now runs three robust organizing centers, in Reading, Allentown, and Philadelphia. We have a strong, engaged membership base of poor and working-class people, primarily in Latinx and working-class communities. We have a strong track record of local and state campaigns, large-scale mobilizations on federal issues, large-scale civic engagement work, and active leadership among key progressive organizing groups, coalitions, and tables across the state.

About the Position

Make the Road PA is seeking a full-time Director of Communications to work closely on earned media and other communications work on a wide range of economic, racial and immigrant justice campaigns, and to help us to build an effective communications department and program.

They will also look to create opportunities to provide technical assistance/support to our partner organizations.

The ideal candidate will have at least 4 to 5 years of relevant experience with communications including supervision, developing and placing stories in national, state, and local earned media, be deeply committed to fostering democratic participation and developing spokespeople from diverse constituencies, and have excellent writing and editing skills. They will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and able to handle a heavy workload.

Job Responsibilities

The Director of Communications is responsible for the following:

  • Serving as a key media strategist and practitioner for Make the Road’s campaigns for economic and social justice, including proactively developing strategies, Op-Eds, news releases, relationships with media outlets, and spokespeople;
  • Managing communications planning and materials development for multiple competing campaigns;
  • Helping to design and systematize all aspects of Make the Road PA’s work;
  • Drafting and editing communications materials;
  • Helping to develop and drive strategy to establish the organization’s traditional and new media presence;
  • Developing strong systems/protocols on each of the above and providing technical assistance to organizers and leads and organizers to enhance their existing development and communications strategies.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, are results-oriented, and have impeccable writing and project management skills. You should have:

  • Must be bilingual (Spanish and English);
  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • Experience managing multiple projects;
  • Strong writing skills and extensive experience doing communications work including successful and entrepreneurial earned media work; and
  • A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
