Engineering Business Manager 🔥


GitHub Engineering is looking for an experienced Business Manager to join our remotely distributed organization. Interested in being a force multiplier, organizer, and strategic planning partner for growing, scaling, and running our business more effectively?

Who you are: A minister of progress, someone who has a great combination of program management, business operations, and leadership skills. You’ll be someone eager to build connective tissue within the organization and act as an extension of your leadership team in order to create a center of excellence that will help drive functional goals and align with GitHub Engineering strategy.  A successful applicant will have a passion for Engineering at GitHub, a critical eye for detail, and a desire to participate in diverse business environments consisting of technical and non-technical personnel.

As a Business Manager for GitHub’s Engineering organization, you will partner with the Engineering Operations Team and functional Engineering leadership to develop, track, and manage budget, asset, and workforce plans. You will document and mature business processes within teams and coordinate security-critical work streams across the organization. Finally, you will be responsible for managing the team’s internal communications, increasing visibility and clarity to better enable developers. Your responsibilities will include

Planning

  • Quarterly planning – Work with team and department leadership to establish, document, and communicate quarterly planning materials that roll up to the Engineering organizational level. Drive the execution rhythm for teams to develop, track, and report progress against OKRs in support of those strategic goals.
  • Budget and workforce planning – Manage resourcing plans, hiring pipeline and execution, and department-wide onboarding in support of a rapidly growing organization across all of Engineering. Manage contracts, vendor engagements, and purchase renewals, enabling our team and our partner organizations to execute on our security promises with speed and confidence. Manage assets, cross-company access and alignment with our administrative team to ensure the enablement of vendors and Hubbers alike.

Coordinating

  • Cross-functional coordination – Driving and tracking security-critical, department-wide initiatives, ensuring alignment to deliver superb cross-functional execution.
  • Process maturity – Documenting and maturing business procedures to grow, scale, and run your teams more effectively.

Communicating

  • Team communication – Developing, maintaining, and managing the meeting cadence (rhythm of business) including team off-sites, meeting agendas, capturing key insights and action items, and following-up accordingly.
  • Internal communication – Working with team and organizational leadership to create and execute a communications and partnership strategy to grow awareness of team and Engineering-wide initiatives, and highlight initiatives to audiences across the organization.

The minimum qualifications are

  • 3-5 years or demonstrable proficiency in business or program management
  • General experience in the following disciplines with deep experience in one or more:
    • Project management
    • Quarterly planning
    • Internal communications
    • Driving cross-functional security initiatives
  • Proven ability to work in an independent manner with minimal oversight, and to work across teams and partner well with people with diverse professional backgrounds
  • Demonstrated program ownership and consistent delivery against commitments, including strong organizational skills, follow-through, and attention to detail
  • Experience working with remote and distributed teams
  • Exceptional documentation and written communication skills

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience working closely with Engineering teams
  • Basic scripting experience with Ruby, Python, Go, Bash, Powershell or other languages
  • Experience working with git and GitHub
  • Understanding of the developer ecosystem
