ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION: Fairplay, formerly known as Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), educates the public about commercialism’s impact on kids’ wellbeing and advocates for the end of child-targeted marketing. Our work routinely makes headlines around the world, most recently for campaigns holding Facebook and YouTube accountable for their practices which impact children, and calling out the potential harms of a proposed Instagram for kids. Our advocacy has led corporations such as Google, Mattel, Disney, and Nickelodeon to change their marketing practices. We are also the home of the Children’s Screen Time Action Network, a collaborative group of family professionals and practitioners working to reduce kids’ screen time. Fairplay also hosts the annual global event, Screen-Free Week.

POSITION SUMMARY: Screen-Free Week is an annual celebration that takes place the first week of May in homes, schools, and communities throughout the world. Participants pledge to spend a week without entertainment screens and instead enjoy offline time with family and friends – reading, playing, exploring, gardening, hiking, crafting, cooking, and more. Prior to the pandemic, over 150,000 individuals celebrated, and we hope to continue our programming in Covid-safe ways this year and to restore participation as time goes on.

The Screen-Free Week Coordinator, a part-time, temporary position, will create more awareness for this global celebration in 2022. The Coordinator will report to the Family & Education Manager at Fairplay (host of Screen-Free Week), and can be based remotely. The Coordinator is expected to work 15 hours a week, beginning in early January 2022 and continuing through at least May 29, 2022.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Expand participation in Screen-Free Week through strategic social media planning, in order to increase the number of individuals, schools, and communities.
  • Identify and reach out to potential new partners, event organizers, endorsers, and communities, in order to increase the number of registered events.
  • Work to increase Screen-Free Week mentions in the media.
  • Write and send targeted emails to different organizers (family, school, community), to keep them apprised of resources and Screen-Free Week news.
  • Collect blogs and create/curate resources for the Screen-Free Week website, to ensure a steady rotation leading up to and winding down from Screen-Free Week.
  • Actively solicit and organize photos, videos, artwork, and testimonials that showcase private and public celebrations of Screen-Free Week for post-event recaps, future publicity, and donor engagement.
  • Coordinate Screen-Free Week volunteers.
  • Passion for collaborating with people across sectors, cultures, and identities. Willingness to help build an equitable and inclusive work environment, and work towards anti-oppression personally and professionally.
  • Project management skills. Ideal candidates are strategic thinkers just as interested in process as outcomes, and are able to see both the “big picture” and the small details needed to get from step to step.
  • 2-4 years of experience and/or education in event planning, communications, education, psychology, sociology, journalism, public relations.
  • Independent, enthusiastic worker possessing strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using social media for event promotion.
  • Demonstrated experience using basic WordPress or similar website platforms. No coding required.
  • Familiarity with basic photo editing programs.
  • Demonstrated experience using Google suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interact effectively and collegially with staff and members of the public.
  • Access to a computer and internet.
  • Sit (usually for long periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move as needed;
  • Manipulation of hands, including but not limited to keyboarding, moving and manipulating a mouse;
  • The noise level in the work environment is dependent on remote work environment;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.
