ABOUT AAPIP

Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) was founded in 1990 in direct response to the lack of strategic investments in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Its mission is to expand and mobilize resources for AAPI communities to build a more just and equitable society. As a national organization with eleven chapters around the country, our dynamic membership includes more than 2,000 members representing more than 100 foundations and corporate grantmaking institutions as well as individuals from philanthropic support organizations, giving circles and AAPI-serving nonprofit organizations throughout the United States.

THE OPPORTUNITY

AAPIP’s fourth decade is being written today through our commitment to and investment in racial solidarity, ethnic diversity within Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) diaspora communities, and through leadership across generations in philanthropy. The Communications Director will lead AAPIP’s coordinated efforts to tell this story with AAPIP’s expanding networks in philanthropy and beyond. Part storyteller, manager and collaborator, the Communications Director leads AAPIP’s contribution to author our own stories–focused on influencing philanthropy–about how and where AANHPI people belong in the continuum of racial reckoning in the United States, resetting harmful public narratives, and providing an essential perspective toward an inclusive democracy.

Working collaboratively with the growing team, the Communications Director leads strategic communications efforts aligned with AAPIP’s vision, mission and values and builds the organization’s overall capacity to fully claim its unique role with a clear and consistent leadership voice in philanthropy. Reporting to the Vice President of Programs and working closely with the President, the Communication Director’s internal leadership roles include developing and stewarding the communications culture and structure to bring AAPIP’s strategic framework to life. This position serves as a first point of contact for news outlets and media and requires strong interpersonal skills, judgment and savvy. Experienced project management for proactive communications and responsiveness to the exigencies of unexpected events is required to succeed in this role. The Communications Director will have highly developed project management skills, including an ability to perform effectively under pressure, facing multiple time-sensitive priorities, all while maintaining the highest level of personal and professional integrity and standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications and Storytelling Strategy:

Collaboratively build and implement a dynamic and cohesive communications strategy to change the narrative about AANHPI people in society within a larger racial justice context and deliver upon AAPIP’s unique position to activate a broader movement around our mission.

More specifically, this includes:

  • Brand & Creative Oversight: Work with the President and senior leaders to develop AAPIP’s institutional voice. Oversee the development and implementation of AAPIP’s visual and creative identity, and messaging. Broaden awareness of AAPIP’s programs, events and priorities across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Storytelling and Movement-Building: Collaboratively develop a compelling narrative through supportive tools and practices that bring our mission and community impact to life. Develop and implement integrated movement-building strategies across organizational, program and operational activities (i.e., media relations, digital media, team communications, branding and identity, member relations, etc.).
  • Create and deliver messages and content through all organizational functions: In partnership with AAPIP staff and leaders, develop strategies and tactics to mobilize new and existing audiences through communications, program and organizational channels. Continually evolve organizational capacity and practices to ensure accessibility for audiences with disabilities, language and other needs.
  • Media: Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership to tactically respond to rapidly changing events. Write press releases, develop talking points for leadership in preparation for interviews. Strengthen and further develop AAPIP’s relationships with journalists, media outlets, and communicators within the AAPIP network to effectively utilize earned and shared media to share critical information and network activities.
  • Lead the organization’s communications strategy through an exciting and dynamic period of growth, ensuring that efforts contribute to strengthening relationships across the network and with existing and new partners.
  • Lead the engagement strategy and editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of electronic and print communications from concept to completion, including program marketing and collateral, social media content, e-newsletter, video content, development, and membership collateral.
  • Foster and steward a culture of a communicating organization, including cultivating thinking beyond specific tasks to the overall mission and context. Ensure that all aspects of AAPIP’s communications are aligned with the organization’s strategic direction, mission, values and strategic framework through an intersectional equity lens.
  • Manage overall communications, including but not limited to coordinating communications working teams (staff, consultants, and members) toward communications goals and objectives; collaboratively developing and evolving communications work plans and calendar; managing communications-related consultants within budget allocations and in-kind external support as needed.
  • Leverage member knowledge and networks to develop related/complementary content that elevates emerging themes and messages.
  • Represent AAPIP to the media and other audiences, exercise excellent judgment as part of AAPIP’s public face. Navigate relationships through collaboration, kindness, service and candor.
  • A minimum of five years in communications, media relations, or public relations, preferably in an advocacy or mission-driven organization
  • Excellent editing skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and shape a narrative, understand messaging nuances
  • Demonstrated experience in building organizational capacity and culture for communications, especially from the ground up.
  • Ability to multitask with attention to detail and a proven track record of simultaneously organizing, prioritizing, and managing complex projects with distributed ownership on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrated track record in earned media, developing and deploying digital platforms, social media, and e-communications tools. Fluency with communication tools such as WordPress, Mailchimp, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
  • Experience with knowledge management and CRM platforms preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse audiences, aligning stakeholders on communications priorities, including developing and supporting multi-organization coalitions and collaborative campaigns in service of racial justice and social change goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop compelling narratives in partnership with community members and stakeholders in service of community authorship of their own stories.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to maintain a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality, and professionalism in all aspects of the job, including displaying courtesy and sensitivity in all contacts.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility, kindness and sense of humor in a fast-paced, complex and ever-changing environment.
  • Deep belief in, passion for, and commitment to racial and gender equity and justice
  • Demonstrated experience with AANHPI community organizations, and general knowledge and continued commitment to engage AANHPI community resources. Experience with AAPIP and writing for philanthropic audiences is a plus.
