Position Overview

The Managing Director, Development and Support Services reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Site Stakeholder Engagement and will lead 2-3 site support coaches in the Site Stakeholder Engagement vertical. The Managing Director will drive the site fundraising support service function to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of site based frontline fundraisers. The Managing Director will work with Development Operations and Finance Departments to operationalize fundraising business practices for the organization. The Managing Director will serve as a lead coach for strategic markets to boost site capacity for revenue generation.

Job Description

The Managing Director, Development and Support Services will:  

 Strategic Vision and Planning (20%) 

  • Work in partnership with Development leaders to create a clear and compelling short- and long-term vision and strategy for the site-based development support function, including the integration of our national HQ based fundraising team. 
  • Set clear priorities, goals, and benchmarks that the SSE team will use to assess success and progress. 
  • Identify and execute key milestones and deliverables that move our fundraising strategies to the short- and long-term vision, responding to risks and issues, and monitoring the impact and progress. 
  • Continue to evolve the fundraising support function over the next 2-4 years as we work to create effectiveness and efficiencies in our systems.  

 Portfolio Management and Coaching (25%) 

  • Manage a portfolio of strategic markets to enhance overall revenue generation strategy and execution for frontline fundraisers in those markets  
  • Engage Market Presidents and other senior leadership in overarching development engagements and updates as necessary  
  • Engage with donors and board members where required to inform on development strategy or stewardship 

Team Management and Operational Execution (40%) 

  • Develop operational planning processes and tracking to ensure effective fundraising execution towards goal 
  • Develop systems to foster and facilitate collaboration and information-sharing between team members and into the organization 
  • Proactively identify operational challenges and facilitate resolution 
  • Participate in department wide operational planning and integration. 
  • Identify new opportunities for professional development for the SSE team members. 
  • Directly manage and coach a team of at least 2-3 direct reports to meet and exceed their goals. Reporting lines and scope could expand in the future.  
  • Convene a community of 20-30 Managing Directors of Development  
  • Identify and develop professional development and learning opportunities for front line fundraisers at City Year  
  • Set structures and supports for site hiring and onboarding of development staff 

 Team Leadership (10%) 

  • Participate in leadership team spaces across Development and the enterprise. 
  • Engage in ongoing self, team, and system wide reflection and inquiry on racial equity. 
  • Steward enterprise-wide initiatives or opportunities with SSE team/Operations department. 
  • Maintain continued learning and understanding of nationwide K-12 education and philanthropy trends. 

 Reporting and Administrative Activities (5%)  

  • Lead on local and national board reporting efforts as needed 
  • Support SVP SSE team on special projects as needed 

 THE IDEAL CANDIDATE  

 The Managing Director, Development and Support Services will bring deep experience leading and inspiring fundraising teams and creating systems and processes that bring strategic revenue plans to life. The ideal candidate relishes coaching, convening and collaborative strategic revenue planning while prioritizing accountability and the use of data analytics in performance management.  

 

This leader will build strong relationships with development staff at sites and at City Year Headquarters to best leverage the fundraising talent and capacity across the network in a nationally aligned, locally relevant manner.

 ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS  

  •  Experience directly managing and growing high performing development staff members; Ability to support strong development professionals in becoming better at their craft and growing as professionals  
  • Strong track record of soliciting gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, as well as engaging board members and inspiring them to help with revenue generation 
  • Lived commitment to the organization’s core mission, vision, and culture, with a special focus on building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community  
  • Ability to connect programs to funding, creatively generating other resources, and building collaborative and strategic partnerships. 
  • Experience with and knowledge of school systems, schools, student and youth/young adult development a strongly desired plus.
