ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network [1] (EJN) aims to engage and support journalists and media organizations around the globe to effectively produce and promote environmental and climate news and content. This part-time position supports EJN with a wide variety of tasks including social media and outreach, research, and helping to manage limited-time and special projects.

LOGISTICS

Internews has US offices in California and Washington, DC which support a hybrid workforce with staff working remotely, fully in-office or partially remote. Ultimately this position may work remotely from the US, partially remote from our Washington, DC office, or fully in-office for candidates based I the DC area. You must have work authorization that does not require sponsorship from Internews.

This is a part-time position anticipated to start in December 2021 or January 2022 and last for an estimated 10 months with the possibility of an extension. Past employees in this position have on occasion moved into full-time jobs with Internews, contingent upon the availability of grant funding.

This position has a closing date of December 6, 2021.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Support the EJN team by handling social media and other outreach. Tasks will include drafting and boosting stories and announcements on social media, developing and implementing strategies to boost engagement, and helping to devise and implement other social media campaigns.
  • Design graphics and other promotional assets on Canva for use on social media and the EJN website.
  • Review social media and newsletter analytics.
  • Expand outreach in our coverage areas, be it by connecting with other media organizations or finding networks through which to spread our opportunities.
  • Collect data, conduct surveys or interviews and write updates for the website and newsletter.
  • Support the judging of grant and Fellowship proposals by reviewing applications and assisting staff with program administration.
  • Help moderate email groups comprising thousands of EJN members posting messages on topical forums.
  • Write stories for EJN’s newsletters, for instance after researching the impacts that some of our stories have had on public policies and debates.
  • Help manage time-limited projects, such as EJN’s UN Ocean Conference Fellowships.
  • Support logistics for webinars which may include, but is not limited to visa application support, airfare and lodging requests, and liaising with team members to coordinate travel.
  • There may be further opportunities to get involved with various tasks depending on candidate’s skillset and preference.

QUALIFICATIONS WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Required

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong background in social media management, journalism, and/or communications.
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Interest in working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Understanding of the media landscape and ability to think out of the box on ways we can support its growth going forward.

Preferred

Note: Candidates who do not have these preferred qualifications, but are interested and willing to learn, are encouraged to apply.

  •  Editorial, fact-checking and/or copy-editing experience.
  • Knowledge of Canva and Microsoft Excel.
  • Work or educational experience in media, environmental issues or international development.
