Project Manager 🔥

About ALC and ALC Court Watch: The Abolitionist Law Center [1] (ALC) is a nonprofit law firm fighting to defend prisoners and abolitionists, and a community organizing project aiming to build a world without police and prisons. In January 2020, ALC launched ALC Court Watch [2]: a volunteer-run court watch program committed to transformative racial justice by keeping the courts accountable through observation, data collection, and public reporting. Volunteers gather court docket and arrest data in order to produce viable reports that benefit community members organizing against mass incarceration, state violence, and racial apartheid in the Pittsburgh region. ALC Court Watch’s most recent work has focused on public access to virtual, remote preliminary hearings and organizing for unconditional pre-trial freedom for those held in Allegheny County Jail.

Position Overview: The Abolitionist Law Center Court Watch program is hiring a Project Manager to maintain our active docket scraping program that collects and aggregates data from preliminary arraignments and loading them to an Airtable. We gather this information to create a narrative in numbers of the impact of the Allegheny County criminal courts and jail. This position will act as the gate-keeper of the data, and the medium between the data and its users.

ALC’s Court Watch docket scraping Project Manager will oversee the facility and use of our docket scraping program. The project manager will maintain the software that collects and aggregates data from publicly accessible dockets. Keeping close contact with those utilizing the data is key. To that end, the Project Manager would be in regular contact with general users, ALC Court Watch volunteers and users to make sure the program remains relevant, accurate and meaningful. A semi-annual report is produced which highlights the information gathered.
