Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a skilled Executive Communications Advisor to support the office of the CEO in communicating our work with key stakeholders. The Executive Communications Advisor will act as external communications director to ensure our message and vision are shared consistently from the CEO’s office.

The Executive Communications Advisor will serve as the main liaison between the CEO, President and COO, Chief of Staff, and Communications office. They will lead proactive and reactive press and media response from the CEO’s office and ensure alignment of message and narrative across mediums and platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a CPE ambassador

  • Prepare for and participate in meetings and speaking engagements on behalf of the CEO, coordinating on key messages and talking points
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with media and current and prospective partners/stakeholders
  • Represent the organization across a diverse array of media appearances and platforms
  • Support the development of written communications (e.g., op-eds) on behalf of the organization that are responsive to our distinct audiences and that leverage CPE’s voice and advocacy positions
  • Establish collaborative working relationships with key internal stakeholders; foster and sustain a culture of cooperation, trust, communication, mutual support, teamwork, and integrity
  • Coordinate with communications staff on messaging across multiple audiences.

Inform vision for strategic communications

  • Serve as a thought partner to the CEO, Chief of Staff, and President/COO to prioritize strategic externally facing, narrative building projects and opportunities within the CEO’s office during a high-growth phase
  • Support the CEO in vetting which media opportunities align with CPE’s strategic plan and theory of change and those that will yield the greatest ROI
  • Remain current on issues within the public safety space and brief the Senior Leadership team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a similar, high-performance role (e.g., communications advisor, press manager, public affairs advisor, etc)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas effectively - verbally, in writing, and presentations
  • Adept at quickly getting up to speed on new areas and a desire to operate outside of comfort zone
  • Advanced decision-making skills; comfortable taking initiative to move tasks forward
  • Proactive in surfacing problems and finding solutions
  • Passionate about race and social justice
  • Experience in a quickly growing start-up or non-profit environment preferred
