The Sr. Director of Development, Northeast will be joining the energetic and growing Development Division at Conservation International. This position is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding new prospects and individual donors for the Northwest region. The Development team raises $50M-$100M annually in funds from individuals and foundations and serves as relationship managers for donors of all levels to catalyze the resources needed for Conservation International to harness nature’s ability to mitigate climate change, to bring ocean conservation to scale globally, to demonstrate sustainability for nature and people in priority landscapes and seascapes, and to accelerate innovation in science and finance for conservation.  

The Sr. Director is responsible for achieving specific multi-figure short-term and long-term fundraising goals and growing the portfolio in the Northeast region to meet yearly and multi-year revenue targets. The Sr. Director will work closely with local volunteers, local Board and Leadership Council members, and Development leadership staff throughout CI to collaborate on fundraising opportunities and strategies. The Sr. Director represents CI externally and continually builds strong relationships with prospects. The Director will develop and execute cultivation strategies for prospective high-net-worth donors. Strategies include direct solicitation and cultivation meetings that will lead to large gifts to support operating and restricted program needs. The Sr. Director is responsible for preparing detailed progress reports of all fundraising activities.

This position works closely with Brand and Communications, and fellow Development staff to plan and execute several strategic events, including pre-and post-event donor solicitation. Duties are performed under limited or “as needed” supervision. This position reports to the Senior Managing Director, Major Gifts, and is based remotely in the Northeast (proximity to Boston/New York preferred).

RESPONSIBILITIES

REVENUE GENERATION: 

  • Raise at least $1,000,000 in the initial 18 months and grow portfolio to $3 million over time.
  • Create a portfolio of at least 110 major gift prospects to contribute to overall organization fundraising objectives; complete at least 10 gift solicitations of at least $50,000.
  • Maintain up-to-date revenue projections toward annual revenue goals in collaboration with Major Gifts Manager.

PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT: 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for donors and prospects to raise awareness of CI’s mission and broaden CI’s funding base, increasing portfolio productivity to meet annual and multi-year revenue goals.
  • Engage donors through in-person or virtual visits (at least 75 per year), collaboration with CI program staff, mailings, emails, etc. to advance solicitation efforts.
  • Organize small cultivation events and collaborate with Brand and Communications team on design and fundraising strategy for revenue-generating events that support existing and new donor engagement and flexible funding goals.
  • Steward existing donors via written reports and in-person briefings as appropriate.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of moves management activity in Raiser’s Edge and provide monthly and ad-hoc progress reports.
  • Utilize internal and external research to identify high-net-worth individuals new to CI.

MANAGE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS RELATED TO PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT:

  • Work closely with senior development staff and CI leadership to steward and cultivate Board members and recruit and cultivate Leadership Council members in the region.
  • Partner with Conservation International program staff to foster relationships with donors.
  • As needed, work with partner organizations in the local community as part of donor relationship building.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This will be a remote work position based out of the Northeast (proximity to Boston/New York preferred). Conservation International does not have an office in the region so the Sr. Director of Development will work remotely full time.
  •  25% - 50% local and regional travel required.
  • Ability to work irregular and extended work hours, including evenings and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or up to four years of college-level work.
  • 10 or more years related work experience in directly soliciting major gifts.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully cultivating and securing significant gifts of $100K or more from assigned prospects.
  • Experience working with board members and key volunteers in identifying and cultivating prospects.
  • Success in this position requires a person who is a self-starter and can work independently and has impeccable professional integrity and confidence.
  • This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Preferred

  • Graduate-level study or master’s degree.
  • Small and large event experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in fundraising software and systems.
