To heal communities affected by violence, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (www.thehavi.org) fosters hospital and community collaborations to advance equitable, trauma-informed care for violence intervention/ prevention programs. Our vision is to build a system of healthcare that mobilizes hospitals and communities to end violence, together.
Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) vary in the specifics of their design and scope, but typically include a brief intervention in the emergency department or at the hospital bedside as well as intensive community-based case management services following discharge. HVIP services are provided by culturally competent Violence Prevention Professionals who often also serve in a mentorship capacity. HVIPs are rooted in the philosophy that violence is preventable and that violent injury offers a “teachable moment” and unique opportunity to break cycles of violence. HVIPs embrace a public health approach to violence prevention as they are grounded in data, which indicate that victims of violence are at elevated risk for re-injury and violence perpetration. This model has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed studies indicating promising impact on injury recidivism, criminal justice contact, and trauma symptoms. HVIPs are now a recommended practice by the federal government.
The network has grown to hundreds of individuals, including physicians, nurses, therapists, gang interventionists, outreach workers and researchers who are affiliated with 41 member programs in the U.S., Canada, England and El Salvador. Our goal is to support the growth of HVIPs throughout the United States.
The HAVI's TTA department works to assist member HVIPs and cohorts of new HVIPs strengthen their programs and improve practices through dynamic and informed training and technical assistance provided by expert HVIP trainers. Additionally, new HVIPs are launched with the guidance and training of the TTA department staff. Other TTA activities include training, module, and toolkit development, managing the HAVI National TTA Center, overseeing the HAVI Certified National Faculty and all related performance management and evaluation. The HAVI TTA activities are responsive and dynamic and are meant to inform key stakeholders, including hospital and community organization leadership, hospital medical directors and clinicians, community leaders and stakeholders, program managers and supervisors, frontline violence intervention specialists, and community-based organizations.
The HAVI hosts a large annual conference, which convenes over 500 professionals implementing our health approach throughout the country and the world. We also staff member working groups that focus on Mental Health, Research, Policy, Workforce Development, and more, and provide training and technical assistance to hospitals and communities that want to begin HVIPs and to existing programs that need support.
The HAVI is a fiscally sponsored project of Health Resources in Action, Inc. (HRiA). HRiA is a nonprofit public health and medical research funding organization based in Boston, Massachusetts with a mission to help people live healthier lives and build healthier communities through prevention, health promotion, policy, and research. HRiA works with a diverse group of clients across the country to address some of the most critical public health issues using innovative and evidence-based approaches to improve population health. Our clients include the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, state and local health departments, hospitals, and private/corporate philanthropic entities.

Capacity Building Coordinators (CB Coordinators) will play a critical role in supporting and expanding the Capacity Building cluster at the HAVI. CB Coordinators will collaborate with a variety of internal staff, members, partners, consultants, and other stakeholders in the violence-intervention community. We seek CB Coordinators with program management experience, a passion for violence intervention work and a commitment to addressing the systemic racism and inequity that leads to it, with particular emphasis on the public health approach to community violence prevention. Candidates should be able to collaborate with a variety of roles and disciplines (training and technical assistance, research, design, communications, operations) necessary to get the work around hospital-based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) capacity building accomplished. The HAVI is looking for people with 3-6 years of program management and possess a strong capacity to focus on clear, achievable goals while able to pivot and adjust as new opportunities arise.
Within the Capacity Building Cluster, we are looking to hire three separate CB Coordinators --each will serve as a coordinator for one of the three teams in the CB cluster, including 1) Training & Technical Assistance (TTA), 2) Planning & Design (P&D), and 3) Peer Learning (PL).
The CB Coordinators will report to the Director of the team they are joining (E.g., Director of TTA, Director of Peer Learning, and Director of Planning and Design) and while there will be many commonalities of that all CB Coordinators will share in their ongoing duties and responsibilities, there will also be specific foci to each of the jobs that are described in greater details below. Salary for these positions at $50,000 and is commensurate with experience. The CB Coordinator is a full-time, fully remote position.
We have prepared this one job posting that will be used to recruit all three positions. CB Coordinator candidates are welcome to customize their application for a specific team or indicate if there is a team that they are not interested in applying to in the cover letter. The HAVI recruiters will review all proposals and decide candidate applicability to the needs of the positions as well. To that end, below are overviews of the three opportunities and how their work will be unique within the CB team they will be joining:
• The CB Coordinator for the Training & Technical Assistance (TTA) team within the CB Cluster will assist the Director and the TTA team in the planning, implementation, and assessment of TTA provided to emerging HVIPs as well as members across the HAVI network. This will include managing training (virtual and in-person), overseeing, and facilitating TA calls and visits, the creation and sharing of resources and materials, as well as assistance in assessing and measuring the quality and needs for future work. Additional responsibilities will be around fielding and assessing TTA requests as well as overseeing and supporting the HAVI faculty and their work. Direct communication and interface with funders, clients, and partners will be expected of this role and client management and attention to detail will be paramount to their success.
• The CB Coordinator for the Planning and Design (P&D) team within the CB Cluster will assist the Director and the P&D team in the planning, creation, and adaptation of various materials that will be used for ongoing TTA. The CB Coordinator for P&D will work with internal and external structural designers, graphic designers, content specialists, and end-users to ensure that the materials generated by the team are of the highest quality and steeped in adult learning pedagogy. Emphasis will be put on the development and implementation of training and support for Violence Prevention Professionals (VPP) working on the frontlines and in communities being served by HVIPs. Managing the VPP certification process and ongoing VPP professional development will be a key aspect to the work, as well as collaborating with the TTA and PL teams to implement Direct communication and interface with funders, clients, and partners will be expected of this role and client management and attention to detail will be paramount to their success.
• The CB Coordinator for the Peer Learning (PL) team within the CB Cluster will assist the Director and the PL team in the planning, implementation, and assessment of activities supporting the sharing of information and development of HAVI member programs. This will include member planning groups, planning for, and implementing the annual conference, virtual and in-person site visits, managing awards for sites and site staff as well as assisting in the ongoing work at the agency around standard and indicators and HVIP quality. Direct communication and interfacing with members, site staff, and other stakeholders will be expected of this role and client management and attention to detail will be paramount to their success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to the team-specific tasks outlined above, all three of the CB Coordinators roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist the team Director in planning and implementing team meetings and activities.
- Manage the team’s document development, updating, and sharing of resources with existing and prospective HVIP partners.
- Assist Senior Managers in the planning and implementation of TTA with assigned sites.
- Manage the technology and materials development for in person and virtual training/webinars.
- Partner with staff across the Capacity Building Cluster on other teams and in other clusters to manage ongoing programs and activities, as needed.
- Manage additional tasks, as assigned, with attention to detail
- Provide responsive and careful client management for funders, TTA recipients, advisory board members, and other partners.
- Schedule and facilitate calls, develop agendas, and report on next steps and meeting outcomes.
- Provide technical and administrative support for both on-line and virtual training and manage training logistics prior to and during training, including virtual training support.
- Assist operations staff with contract development and oversight.
- Assist team Director in onboarding faculty, consultants, and new staff for the work on the specific team.
- Assist in developing training assessments and reporting for all TTA to measure impact and identify areas of TTA improvement.
- Coordinate communication with TTA providers and delegate training tasks and preparation in collaboration with operations staff.
- Provide administrative support for events and programming, with particular attention to The HAVI Annual Conference.
- Provide staff support for The HAVI working groups and advisory board.
- Manage additional tasks, as assigned, with attention to detail.
- Recommend training materials and methods, order and maintain in-house training equipment and facilities, and manage the budget set for training.
- Gather and evaluate information from participants and faculty on previous training to identify weaknesses and areas that need additional training.
- Participate in the development and facilitation of co-created spaces to meaningfully engage with our member programs.
- Identify best and promising practices for working in and developing relationships in virtual environments.
- Conduct general research on violence prevention, adult education, and related topics.
- Support CB Cluster and other HAVI staff with proposal writing and/or submission, as needed.
- Bachelors required, Masters a plus (i.e., Pubic health, Public Affairs, Education, Public Administration) Computer/software skills
- Experience working in or supporting a violence prevention program preferred
- Experience managing educational programs or training institutes preferred
- High level of comfort using and supporting others in navigating online learning and tracking platforms.
- Experience with the US healthcare system specifically in clinical responses to violence, trauma informed care and practice, and health and racial equity.
