Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a skilled Project Manager with an unwavering passion for racial justice and two or more years of experience driving project success. This position will report to the Program Manager for Law Enforcement Initiatives, and will support the work of Community Engagement team members as part of the Program Management Office (PMO). This Project Manager will be joining a broader team of experienced project management professionals who are deployed throughout our geographically distributed organization to provide exceptional project management expertise and support.

The Project Manager for Community Engagement (CE) will be responsible for supporting the CE team in its work to center Black lives and lift up Black voices in the work to achieve racial equity in public safety.

One primary area of focus will be to support the Community Engagement team in its work to engage local communities in the findings and recommendations CPE is delivering to police departments and communities where we do our work. This includes, but is not limited to: developing and executing on plans to do outreach to the local community; planning for community activities and virtual events (e.g., community forums, Instagram Live, youth town halls, educational events at schools); coordinating efforts with CPE's Law Enforcement Relationship Managers; and additional project management duties as assigned.

About CPE's Community Engagement Program

Ending racial bias in policing and redesigning public safety demands a broad community response. The Community Engagement team at CPE is responsible for reflecting and elevating the voices of non-law enforcement stakeholders (especially Black communities) in the effort to end racial bias in policing. We do so by centering the community perspective in CPE's reform work, and by sharing CPE's data, research, and advocacy resources with community members working to change public safety practices in their cities.

About the Program Management Office

CPE recognizes project management as a core function of the organization; in 2019, we established a Program Management Office (PMO) to evolve, promote, and enforce CPE's standards for project management. The PMO itself is a centralized team of project management professionals throughout the organization to provide PM support to their assigned division -- so the Community Engagement Project Manager is situated within the PMO and supported by a team of professionals of the same discipline, but most of their active time is spent in direct collaboration with the members of the CE program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support CE team members in clarifying project goals and planning, monitoring, and delivering projects
  • Ensure adequate communication and hand-off of tasks between CE and its collaborators, including external partners and internal stakeholders
  • Create project timelines and execute plans using project management software (Asana)
  • Develop, enforce, and improve established processes, standards, and documentation needed to successfully execute on program goals
  • Manage capacity and the volume of day-to-day work in progress
  • Build project management professionalism among project staff:
  • Assessing and managing risks to project success
  • Promoting consistent adoption of operating standards
  • Supporting team members in performing retrospectives to assess and improve processes
  • Supporting team members in adopting measurement and evaluation (M&E) practices and tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Provide project management and operational support to the Program Manager for Law Enforcement Initiatives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree / 2+ years of project management experience
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of project management methodologies and tools
  • Ability to quickly adapt and apply new project management tools and processes to a growing organization
  • Fluency in racial justice work, particularly around racial equity as it relates to public safety
  • Demonstrated organizational and critical-thinking skills needed to work effectively on multiple projects with competing priorities
  • Exceedingly strong communication skills (both written and verbal), with a passion for distilling complex ideas into language that is easy to understand
  • Be a strong team player, assisting the overall team and peers to achieve success
