Organization Profile: 

Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As students journey through high school and continue to grow their businesses, BUILD helps them explore college and career options, and assists students with the college application process. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals.

BUILD currently serves approximately 2,000 high school students annually at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington DC, New York City and Boston.

Position Summary: 

Reporting directly to the National Director of Organizational Learning and Impact, the National Director of College Success (NDCS) is responsible for developing and executing a strategy to ensure the success of students in BUILD from junior year in high school through to the attainment of a post-secondary degree or certification, and the landing of the student’s first job in a well-paying, fulfilling and meaningful career. 

The NDCS will also co-develop BUILD’s alumni strategy; coordinate across regions and departments; and leverage partnerships with colleges and universities, test preparation companies, and student support organizations. 

 

Position Responsibilities: 

Program Design

  • Create a network of board members, mentors, and volunteers who are willing to serve as a network and provide social capital for BUILD alumni as “Trusted Advisors.” Create intentional mentor matches within this group, and provide training and resources
  • Support development for the long-term sustainability of the Alumni Program, including funds raised directly from BUILD alumni after college graduation
  • Work with the Director of Career Pathways to design programming that improves students’ college and career readiness
  • Develop evaluation metrics for BUILD’s Post-Secondary Success Program
  • Provide oversight and support for the regional College and Career Coaches in the Bay Area, Boston, Washington DC, and New York
  • Support regions in establishing or expanding Early College/Dual Enrollment programs with local colleges and universities
  • Identify and deploy systems and tools that can support the academic attainment and academic behaviors required for college and career success (i.e. texting apps)
  • Support the cultivation and design of the BUILD Alumni Program
  • Handle special projects as needed

Partnerships

  • Secure articulation agreements with colleges and universities eager to accept BUILD students and provide necessary supports
  • Develop official Memorandum of Understanding and/or partnership agreements with community organizations including Year Up, Bottom Line, UAspire, Handshake and more
  • Develop a partnership with an online SAT/ACT test preparation provider
  • Identify and create a Play-List of online resources designed to support students in improving their SAT/ACT scores and navigating the college application process
  • Secure scholarship dollars from colleges and universities earmarked for BUILD students
  • Help to secure paid summer internships and summer jobs for BUILD alumni

Candidate Requirements:

  • BA or BS degree required. Master’s degree or higher in Education or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in a non-profit or education setting providing direct service to youth from under-resourced communities
  • Prior experience working in higher education, college counseling, and/or workforce development training preferred
  • High cultural competence with experience serving diverse populations and students from under-resourced communities
  • Passionate about continuous improvement and learning and bringing both skill and curiosity to our learning theory, design and improvement efforts
  • Skill and passion to drive change across a large, complex organization
  • Drive to understand and illuminate the root causes of educational equity and are thoughtful about how programming, research and data has the potential to either dismantle or perpetuate systems of oppression
  • Experience with entrepreneurship education and project-based experiential learning 

 

Position Details:

  • Full Time/Exempt
  • Location: Applicants must live in one of the following states or be willing to relocate - Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., New York, California, Texas, Georgia, or Florida. This role functions mostly remote with the ability to work in-person at one of our hub offices in Boston, New York City, Washington DC, or San Francisco. BUILD is currently operating fully remote through November 1, 2021 in response to the COVID-19 health crisis.
  • Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed. Occasional extended travel (3-5 days) to remote sites is required during the year, as particular training and support needs arise. Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed. 
  • Flexible work environment and occasional evening and weekend hours are also required to fulfill the duties of this position.
