The Position As our inaugural Director of Finance and Administration, you will join Thrive Scholars at an exciting time of significant organizational growth.
In this role, you will help refine and steer our financial and operational strategies, ensuring scalable, effective and efficient day-to-day administration and long-term sustainability.
You will manage a budget of over $10M and will partner closely with our out-of-house accountants to drive strong financial operations.
In overseeing facilities, vendors and IT services, you will work to ensure that Thrive Scholars has the administrative infrastructure and resources necessary to achieve its vision.

The Position

As our inaugural Director of Finance and Administration, you will join Thrive Scholars at an exciting time of significant organizational growth. In this role, you will help refine and steer our financial and operational strategies, ensuring scalable, effective and efficient day-to-day administration and long-term sustainability. You will manage a budget of over $10M and will partner closely with our out-of-house accountants to drive strong financial operations. Additionally, in overseeing facilities, vendors and IT services, you will work to ensure that Thrive Scholars has the administrative infrastructure and resources necessary to achieve its vision.


This is a full-time position and will report to our Managing Director of Talent and Operations. This role has the option of being fully remote or based out of one of our offices, in Boston or Los Angeles.


Essential Functions

Accounting & Financial Reporting (45%)

  • Liaise with our outsourced accounting firm and direct the day-to-day accounting operations including oversight of accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and grant accounting
  • Oversee the disbursement of Scholar stipends
  • Manage staff debit card platform (PEX) and departmental expenditures
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, ensuring financial statements and other reporting are accurate completed
  • Oversee the accounting and development reconciliation process
  • Produce budgets and reports for development proposals and grants
  • Manage the process for external audit and preparation of annual consolidated financial statements in conjunction with outside auditors
  • Manage federal and state tax and employer registration and filings

Financial Management (30%)

  • Manage, develop, and direct the annual operating budget and audit processes
  • Analyze and present financial statements generated by the accounting firm to senior leaders and the Board of Directors
  • Provide financial planning and forecasting, working with the President and COO, CEO, the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, and other key staff to analyze current financial performance and project future needs, risks, and opportunities. 
  • Working closely with the Development team, develop and drive systems to track and manage revenue projections and restricted funding
  • Ensure adherence to organizational financial policies and controls
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the organizational financial strategy

Administration (25%)

With support from our Operations Coordinator:

  • Manage relationships and contracts with related vendors (i.e. accounting, property management, office equipment, IT support)  
  • Ensure the functioning and maintenance of Thrive Scholar’s physical premises
  • Work with IT support vendor and members of the operations team to maintain technology equipment and inventory. 
  • Support with troubleshooting technology and facilities issues as needed.
  • Lead key administrative projects, such as office relocation, adoption of new technology or financial practices/systems, as needed
  • Conduct assessment and renewal of organizational insurance policies, including general liability, D&O, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4+ years of experience in accounting or finance role, or MBA
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a non-profit setting
  • Experience leading finance functions, with skills in budget development and financial analysis. 
  • Expert knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices and GAAP.
  • Strong professional ethics and discretion in handling sensitive information. 
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to strategically collaborate across functions
  • Ability to initiate, build and implementing new systems and processes to address organizational needs
  • Initiative in problem-solving, solution-focused mindset, and attention to detail
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

Thrive Scholars offers a robust compensation and benefits package including high-quality health and dental insurance, three weeks of paid vacation, generous professional development funding, and access to an employer-matched retirement plan. This is a full-time exempt position.

Salary Range: $75,000-90,000
