About GiveWell

GiveWell is motivated by the simple question: how can we do as much good as possible?

In our efforts to answer this question, our researchers search for and recommend outstanding philanthropic giving opportunities. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation programs in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found [1] we can have the greatest impact, according to our criteria.

We direct funding to outstanding giving opportunities in two main ways:

1. Our recommended charities. We rigorously vet and recommend a short list of top charities [2] that meet our criteria [3] of being evidence-backed, cost-effective, transparent, and in need of more funding. Our nine current top charities work on death-averting (malaria chemoprevention [4], antimalarial nets [5], vaccine incentivization [6], and vitamin A supplementation [7]) and life-improving (providing cash transfers [8] and deworming medication [9]) programs.

We continuously review our giving recommendations, and this analysis is available, for free, on our website. Based on our recommendations, donors have given more than $800 million to our recommended programs since our founding in 2007. In 2020 alone, GiveWell donors contributed more than $170 million to our recommendations, which we estimate will avert between 29,000 and 48,000 deaths and provide parasitic worm treatments for over 12 million children.

2. Grants to promising opportunities. GiveWell also recommends grants [10] to projects whose impact is less directly measurable but might be even greater than that of our recommended charities. Past grants include support for an initiative to improve the uptake and implementation by governments of evidence-based policy [11] and the first randomized controlled trial of mask-wearing in a low-income country [12] to increase mask use and prevent COVID-19 transmission.

Going forward, we expect to broaden the scope of what we consider funding. We will remain driven by our search for funding opportunities that can save or improve lives the most. By joining GiveWell, you will have the opportunity to influence and contribute to our approach and success in directing millions of dollars in funding to highly impactful charities.

Transparency is a core value of ours [13] and we aim to publish as much supporting information regarding our conclusions as we can. The Content Editor team at GiveWell is key to enabling us to produce clear, informative, and well-supported public written materials that allow donors to decide whether to support our top charities [14].

The role

As a Content Editor at GiveWell, you will contribute to our work in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Writing summaries of GiveWell’s conversations with various subject matter experts to be published on our website. Conversation notes are essential to GiveWell’s research process; for more on why, see our 2012 blog post on this topic [15]. Examples of completed conversation notes include:
  • A conversation with Stefano Caria and Paolo Falco about job application workshops in Ethiopia [16]
  • A conversation with MiracleFeet about clubfoot treatment [17]
  • A conversation with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids about its work [18]
  • Ensuring that web content including research reports on charities and interventions is accurate, well-supported, and professional. GiveWell makes it a high priority to ensure that the reports we publish, which form the basis for our recommendations, are easy to follow and professional and that all factual statements are accurate and traceable to their sources. As a Content Editor you will establish quality control for published reports.
  • Collecting and organizing information for research projects. You may work one-on-one with researchers on our team to organize large amounts of information from multiple sources. Examples include David Roodman's project to reanalyze a key study on the impact of deworming [19] and a project to track national policies on uses of lead paint.

About you

To be successful in this role, we expect you are:

  • A skilled writer. You can turn informal communications into clear, concise, and professional writing.
  • Highly attentive to detail. We rely on your content improvements to establish the credibility of our research, to uncover errors that affect our decisions, and to produce materials that are close to error-free.
  • A strong communicator. You are proactive about communicating and both receptive to feedback and willing to provide feedback. You communicate productively with coworkers in both oral and written exchanges.

Other highly desirable skills, experience, or characteristics:

  • Passionate about maximizing global well-being as much as possible. GiveWell is focused on programs that target low- and low-to-middle-income countries. You want to contribute to GiveWell’s mission and are passionate about maximizing what can be accomplished with the resources available to help the people in these countries.
  • Excited to work at a growing, agile organization. GiveWell currently has approximately 40 full-time staff members. This means that we expect a lot from each person, and we often ask people to contribute outside their core area of focus. If you like trying and learning new things, we are potentially a great fit.

Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. Here’s a secret: there's no such thing as a "perfect" candidate. GiveWell is looking for exceptional people who want to help create a place where everyone can thrive. So however you identify and whatever background you bring with you, please apply if this role would make you excited to wake up every day.
