Associate Director, Annual Funds 🔥


Bank Street College of Education has three divisions: Children’s Programs, including the School for Children, the Family Center, Head Start and Liberty LEADS; the Graduate School of Education; and the Bank Street Education Center, which houses Bank Street’s portfolio of public impact work.

The College relies on its annual funds to provide critical unrestricted support to these divisions. Currently, there are annual funds for the School for Children, the Family Center, the Graduate School of Education, and the President’s Fund. There is an opportunity for this position to develop a strategy to combine or otherwise re-structure these funds to better benefit the College.

Position Description: Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Major Gifts, and working in consultation with the Director of Development and Alumni Relations, School for Children (SFC), and outside consulting firm, the incoming Associate Director will provide strategic direction and support for the Annual Funds through a robust direct mail and digital program. The Associate Director will also carry a discrete portfolio of mid-level donors to cultivate, solicit, and steward.

Bank Street seeks an advancement professional who combines a real love for messaging, communications, and donor outreach with a strong analytical mindset and managerial abilities. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience
  • Exemplary, inspirational writing skills; a strong sense of visual design is helpful but not mandatory
  • Strengths in at least 4 of the following 6 aspects of development and a willingness to learn others as needed: creation of effective collateral and communications pieces; direct mail experience; database management; frontline fundraising; planned giving strategies; and digital solicitation.
  • An analytical mindset paired with the ability to mine and follow data
  • Energy, creativity, strategic sense, patience, and a passion for fundraising

Responsibilities:

Management of Direct Mail and Digital Annual Fund Programs – 65%

  • Provide leadership, messaging, content and tactical execution of Bank Street’s Annual Giving programs via direct mail and digital solicitations
  • Lead strategy and execution of Bank Street Giving Day, a cross-College celebration of Bank Street and a prime fundraising opportunity
  • Manage relationships with direct mail and e-solicitation business partners. Serve as the day-to-day liaison. Ensure the program remains within budget and on schedule.
  • Set constituency audiences for each annual fund campaign and review data pulls for direct mail appeals. Create and upload e-solicitations into Raiser’s Edge with proper segmentation.
  • Collaborate with DARO colleagues to ensure alignment of messaging and cadence across communications
  • Track progress toward goal and create reports to assess annual fund performance
  • Support all fundraising initiatives that require website or physical collateral to raise annual funds for the College
  • Remains abreast of best practices and innovative ideas, incorporating into Bank Street’s annual funds program

Donor outreach and solicitation – 25%

  • Works a discrete portfolio of mid-level donors to the Annual Funds
  • Conducts meetings and calls with donors and potential donors to strengthen their relationship with and inclination to support Bank Street
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations colleagues to identify and engage with alumni who have the potential to increase their financial support of Bank Street
  • Seek to encourage a culture of philanthropy at Bank Street by modeling best practices and supporting colleagues in their efforts to expand support for the organization

Cross-College Collaboration – 10%

  • Regularly collaborate with the Director of Development and Alumni Relations, School for Children (SFC) on theme, tone, messaging, and content of SFC materials
  • Attend School for Children Annual Fund Committee meetings as needed
  • Participate in College-wide Communications Working Group
  • Meet with colleagues from DARO, Children’s Programs, the Graduate School, and the Education Center as needed to create material and content for the Annual Funds, steward donors, and solicit/close gifts

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Five years of experience in professional fundraising
  • Ability to write, edit, and create direct mail pieces on schedule and in the tone and “voice” of Bank Street. Ability to direct, steer, and change that voice as appropriate.
  • Love of donor engagement, resilient attitude and willingness to make cold calls to donors. Approaches donor engagement with a positive attitude and persistence.
  • Team player for whom the broader team’s success is of paramount importance. Gladly supports and contributes to others’ success.
  • Analytical mindset. Enjoys manipulating data in the interest of learning and continuous improvement. Sophisticated spreadsheet and database (preferably Raisers Edge) skills including segmentation, response rate, and ROI analysis preferred.
  • Strong project manager capable of overseeing external vendors (with support from the AVP, Major Gifts) and collaborating with internal partners to ensure the annual funds communications calendar remains on schedule
  • An understanding and appreciation of the role of development in an educational institution is highly desirable
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required
