Staff Accountant


The New York City Bar Association (City Bar), founded in 1870, is a voluntary association of lawyers and law students. The City Bar’s mission is to equip and mobilize the legal profession to practice with excellence, promote reform of the law, and uphold the rule of law and access to justice in support of a fair society and the public interest in our community, our nation, and throughout the world. 


This is a remote work position (including post-pandemic). Our Finance staff must live in New York, or a nearby state, within reasonable travelling distance by ground transportation for occasional in-person meetings at the City Bar for some business activities such as staff meetings, training and events.


JOB FUNCTION/SUMMARY


Assist with Banking activities including setting up new accounts, adding new signatures, bank reconciling items, banking fees, positive pay exceptions, etc. Prepare journal entries and reconciliations for monthly general ledger close. Provide assistance to Senior Accounting Manager with external audit and budget process. Assist with accounting related and general ledger projects. Assist with special projects assigned by management.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):


• Prepare deposits, journalize and input transactions into Great Plains 

• Prepare City Bar Fund monthly investment schedules, entries, reconciliations, income and gains allocations

• Prepare monthly balance sheets account analysis

• Assist in budget process

• Prepare various audit schedules 

• Assist in various IRS Form 990 and CHAR 500 schedules

• Assist in grants reports for City Bar Fund

• Maintain fixed assets module for City Bar Fund, record new assets, and record monthly depreciation

• Prepare and file monthly and quarterly NY State Sales Tax Return

• Prepare bank reconciliations, amortize prepaid expenses and reconcile advertising income against advance receipts


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS


• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

• Minimum 3 years of Accounting experience

• Strong analytical and accounting skills

• Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); knowledge of Statutory accounting principles

• Must be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment

• Detail-oriented and strong time management skills

• Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and take on new challenging tasks

• Proper handling of confidential materials

• Work with minimal up-front guidance, take ownership of their work product, and work closely with many major functional leaders of the Organization.

• Keep current with required job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, participating in professional organizations

• Working Knowledge of Nonprofit Accounting

• Working Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains general ledger software, and the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Questica (Power Plan) budget software and FRx, or similar programs

Starting annualized salary for this role is low to mid $70’s, based on experience.
