Development and Operations Manager


New York Focus is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented and creative candidate to manage day-to-day systems and operations, assist with budget planning, engage in grant prospecting and fundraising research, and write grant applications.

An ideal candidate would share the enthusiasm we bring to this work and be excited to help build and shape New York Focus. This position is remote, but the ideal candidate lives in or near New York state.

About New York Focus

New York Focus is an independent newsroom covering state and local politics, committed to unmasking the operation of public and private power in the Empire State.

In our first nine months, we’ve published investigations of New York’s politicians and power brokers, explainers on under-examined legislation and political processes, and perspectives on nascent popular movements and organizing. Our stories have moved policy, been discussed in legislative hearings, and been cited by publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Intercept, and Politico. 

Our core beats include the state budget and economic policy; climate and energy; housing and homelessness; immigration and labor; and incarceration and criminal justice.

Primary duties and responsibilities for the position are as follows:

Development

  • Research fundraising opportunities, including foundations and large individual donors.
  • Set up calls between funders and organization leadership.
  • Write excellent grant applications that convey the spirit of the publication and its impact on state and city politics.
  • Design and grow a membership program that engages both long-term and new readers and supporters.
  • Creatively think of new ways to meet and exceed fundraising goals.

Operations

  • Manage and build organizational infrastructure, including payroll, benefits, and platforms.
  • Coordinate with lawyers, web developers, accountants, etc.
  • Maintain budget; coordinate with Editor-in-Chief on budget planning.

About You

The ideal candidate would have: 

  • Excitement about investigative journalism that promotes accountability in New York State and City.
  • Demonstrated skills in non-profit development work
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative and experiment with new creative strategies without being assigned them.
  • Familiarity and aptitude with operational systems including budgeting and accounting.
  • High levels of organization.

Compensation 

$55,000 yearly salary
