Director Of Development

FUSE Corps [1] is a national nonprofit that partners with local governments to help urban communities thrive. We work with cities and counties to advance their most urgent priorities centered on ensuring equitable outcomes for the residents they serve. Our projects directly address issues such as economic development, affordable housing, healthcare access, criminal justice reform, public safety, climate resilience and education. Since 2012, FUSE has supported over 200 projects across 35 cities in 15 states. Our work has impacted more than 25 million people nationwide.

FUSE’s approach is based on an executive fellowship model designed to provide local government with the additional leadership capacity needed to accelerate civic innovation and cross-sector collaboration. FUSE Fellows are experienced, entrepreneurial, and results-oriented professionals who have deep credibility in their communities. They work to dispel longstanding mistrust and break down barriers between the public sector and the communities they serve, and take a human-centered design approach to engage community members in developing solutions and policy. When designing projects, FUSE works closely with government and community leaders to identify clear and ambitious deliverables that address fundamental elements of racial, social, and economic justice and equity within a specific issue area. We then conduct a national executive search for each unique position in order to recruit a diverse pool of experienced professionals with the potential to achieve transformational impact in those roles.

Our sustained growth has been fueled by a blend of fee-for-service government contracts and philanthropic support. Over the next several years, FUSE will continue on a strong growth trajectory as we work to double the scale and impact of our work nationally. We are also working to deepen our relationships with the communities we serve and build longstanding partnerships that continue to strengthen our ability to ensure equitable outcomes. Ultimately, our efforts will enable communities to work more effectively, collaboratively, and resiliently in response to established and emerging challenges.

FUSE is seeking its first Director of Development who can help us continue to cultivate a strong base of national and regional philanthropic supporters over the next several years. This individual will be coming to FUSE during a phase of extraordinary growth, joining a 20+ person national team and reporting to FUSE’s Vice President of Strategic Partnerships & Development. The position is available immediately and can be based from a home office anywhere in the continental United States.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Director of Development is a new role that will help solidify FUSE’s ability to continue to serve in our partner communities long-term. FUSE is seeking a self-directed and goal-driven fundraising professional who will serve as a core member of the Strategic Partnerships and Development Team and lead the full spectrum of the organization’s development effort. The Director of Development will be tasked with prospecting, outreach, cultivation, proposal writing, relationship management, report writing, and moves management tracking on behalf of the organization.  It is anticipated that there will be an opportunity to hire 1-2 support staff in 2022, who will support the organization’s development efforts and report directly to the Director of Development.

In addition to these core responsibilities, the Director of Development will lead the following for FUSE:

·      PLANNING: Build on existing pipeline of 250 donors and prospects to develop an overall fundraising strategy that identifies opportunities to pursue and establish new relationships. Work closely with the leadership team, board members, and FUSE alumni to incorporate various perspectives on the proposed targets for the coming year.

·      SECURING MAJOR GIFTS: Execute on a strategy that ensures FUSE can secure the national funding needed each year to cover our operating costs and invest in our future sustainability. Initially, help secure at least $5M-$8M through renewal funding and securing additional six-to-seven figure gifts from new donor prospects.

·      REGIONAL SUPPORT/PROJECT UNDERWRITING: FUSE has historically relied on our government partners to directly cover the costs of projects, but we also seek to help subsidize costs when needed. Regionally-focused philanthropic groups are a key partner in our success, and we seek to build engagements that can lead to an additional $2M-$3M each year to subsidize specific projects.

·      CONTENT DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING: In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and the Communications team, develop creative and impactful pitch decks and marketing materials that share FUSE’s value proposition in a compelling way.

·      SUPPORT OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION: Ensure equity is at the center of everything that FUSE does, including the way we shape new funding or project opportunities, report on outcomes, etc. Proactively contribute to internal conversations around DEI.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

·      Comfortable with prospect/donor research and moves management.

·      Experience in Salesforce or other CRM software required.

·      Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, with an understanding of how to adjust messaging for a variety of audiences and the composure to act as the first point of contact for significant individual and institutional donors.

·      Highly developed emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish trust and engage with a wide array of stakeholders ranging from community members and nonprofit partners to foundation executives and government leaders.

·      Ability to be a proactive and independent worker and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines within a dynamic environment.

·      Passion for and commitment to the mission of FUSE Corps and a belief in the power of cross-sector collaboration and civic innovation to positively impact society’s biggest challenges.

Qualifications

·      7-10 years of development, fundraising, sales, non-profit management, marketing, or similar field.

·      A proven ability to develop and execute winning fundraising strategies and techniques, particularly through private grant making.

·      Ability to travel to meet donors. Travel time may average up to 10% with flexible dates to accommodate various schedules of availability.

·      CFRE Certification preferred.

FUSE Corps is an equal opportunity employer with a core value of incorporating diverse perspectives into our work at every level. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply for this position.
