Senior Social Change Consultant

Senior Social Change Consultant

We held a webinar to present more details about our organisation and this role a recording of this can be found here [1].

About The Social Change Agency

The Social Change Agency comprises a team that are experts in creating social impact using social innovation, peer networks, community organising, collaboration and systemic and organisational change approaches. We provide strategic consulting, communications expertise, training and programme design to create social impact. We combine tried and tested approaches with cutting edge tools and perspectives that often result in original programmes and services that breakthrough long-standing challenges. What do we do best? Creating bespoke, blended solutions so the organisations we work with can change the world.

Our exciting range of clients includes Youth Futures Foundation, Climate-KIC, Guy’s and St Thomas Charity, the Greater London Authority (GLA), King’s College London and the Lloyds Bank Foundation among many others. In addition to our client work, we train the next generation of movement and network builders – our training and events attract some of the brightest and best social changemakers.

We incubate, build and support social movements like the Young Trustees Movement [2], Parents for the Future, and much of the mutual aid movement in the UK. We have brought innovative products to market, such as The Movement Building Canvas [3]Lost Voices [4] and Accountable [5].

Our CultureWe are proud of our culture. Underpinned by our values of wholeheartedness, co-creation, collaboration and pioneering we believe relationships are the glue that holds us all together. It helps us create the most innovative work with our clients and gets us through the most difficult times together – we know that transformational social change is generational work and we must look after ourselves and each other for the long haul. We understand that working makes up a significant part of our lives and we want to make sure that our time spent working is productive, enriching, and joyful.

You’ll be joining a close-knit team – supported and developed to be the best you can be. We believe that every member of our team brings a unique perspective from their experiences and abilities and encourages everyone to be a curious soul about how we can improve everything we do, from how we interact as a team to how we deliver for our clients and communities.

We’re proud to have been certified as a BCorp business, Disability Confident Employer, and an accredited Living Wage Employer. In addition we were listed as one of the top social enterprises in the UK in the SE100.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for a Senior Consultant who wants to be part of a growing organisation that makes impactful social change. We keep the leadership of people with experience of social issues at the heart of that change – it’s an important value of ours and expect our team to share this value.

We’re not your typical consultants. We meet our clients where they are at and co-create innovative solutions with them to help increase their social impact. Typically we work with organisations across the UK and Europe on innovation, systems change, strategy development, governance, network development and management, research and evaluation, and training (this is not an exhaustive list!). We are never dogmatic about our approaches and the team comes with a wide range of expertise in all aspects of change. We are methodologically diverse in co-creating responses to the challenges faced by our clients, and welcome a diversity of perspectives on the many ways that change is made.

The Senior Consultant will be an integral part of the consultancy team, working closely with the Head of Consultancy and providing leadership within the rest of the team and our clients. You will often be the main point of contact for our clients, ensuring that their needs are being met, challenges are being overcome, and the contract is being delivered to a high standard within budget and on time. You will be comfortable with complexity, co-creation and have curiosity for the intricacies of how social change happens. But also bring an analytical approach, attention to detail and an excellent writing style.

Your skills and experience

Experience of building and developing a team: Our work often involves bringing people together to build a shared vision and strategy to unlock social impact. You should feel confident leading people through that process and developing their leadership along the way, both internally with your team, but also with our clients and partners.

Client & Project Management: Proven ability to work with clients in a collaborative and flexible way, while maintaining a close eye on effective project delivery. Clients come to us with challenges that require agile and iterative processes. You must be able to balance strong relationships with clients, flexibility to react to emerging challenges, and all within the constraints of resources available.

Facilitation: Trained and experienced in facilitation techniques with a comfortable and collaborative style that is able to accommodate a variety of learning styles.

Understanding of multiple approaches to social change: You will have an understanding of what it means to take a whole systems approach to social change, with a demonstrable understanding of a variety of approaches to social change (movements, network, community organising, asset-based community development, and beyond). An interest in or experience of governance is desirable.

You will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in social change, and at least 2 of those years in a consultancy role or similar. You should be used to working with and/or overseeing multidisciplinary projects, and confident serving as an SCA representative with clients and stakeholders, including mid to senior leadership of major foundations, local authorities, NGOs, and/or corporations.

Our clients work with us to grow their impact/network/movements so an understanding of network theory and/or social movements is needed. Of course, we will give you full training in our own methodologies. We work with many organisations operating within the charity sector, so a broad overview of the sector and its limitations is useful. This must be balanced with a good business sense for effective delivery of consultancy services and sustainability.

You will typically be working on 4-8 clients/projects at any one time, we are in a period of growth and flux so you must be ready for the messy, passionate, and interconnected world that is social change and a growing business, with lots of opportunity for your own development.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing proposals for small consultancy projects
  • Support on writing bids.

  • Provide support as required to the administration of the consulting practice.

Terms and benefits

Language skills & visa status: Candidates must be fluent in English. You must have the right to work in the UK independently, as we unfortunately are unable to provide visa sponsorship.

Holiday:  22 days plus bank holidays (We close the office in the days between Christmas and New Years – this time is paid for all staff and is in addition to your annual leave entitlement)

Additional Paid Time Off: We offer 2 days paid voluntary time off, encouraging all staff to serve as trustees or any equivalent voluntary positions to contribute to their communities

Health Assured Service: The health and wellbeing of our staff is very important to us. We offer all of our staff access to the Health Assured wellbeing service, which offers a 24 hour support line, structured counselling with external support, and a bank of online resources such as webinars and articles tailored towards health and wellbeing for both you and the members of your family.

Equal Opportunity Employer: We strongly encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are committed to our staff representing the wide variety of backgrounds represented in the communities we work with. If you are concerned that you may not fit 100% of the job specification – please throw your hat in the ring. We never put formal education requirements on any role as we value lived experiences as highly as formal education and training qualifications.

We follow a blind recruitment process, which means that hiring managers for the role are only able to see your work history and answers to application questions when making the decision to progress to the interview stage.

Please visit our main vacancies page [6] for our equal opportunities statement.
