About the position

GCCM’s Special Projects team is responsible for compelling global initiatives that unite the Church around shared values. As the writer/editor for the team, you will be the voice of these projects. Your words will turn the inspiration of the Holy Spirit into high-impact actions around the world.

As the writer/editor for special projects, you will be an essential part of a small team that is making a big difference for our common home. We’re looking for someone who is both collegial and able to work independently, someone who is both willing to learn and deeply experienced. We hope that person is you!

Key responsibilities

Your work will take place before and after the launch of special projects. 

During the development of projects, your duties will include the following:

  • co-developing initial brand guidelines;
  • very quickly synthesizing and editing a very large volume of written materials from a wide range of partners;
  • liaising with translators, web developer, and other colleagues;
  • writing blog posts;
  • writing emails for a public list
  • writing social media posts
  • writing blog posts; and
  • writing press releases and other promotional materials.

Immediately before and subsequent to the launch of projects, your duties will include the following:

  • writing emails for a public list
  • writing social media posts
  • writing blog posts; 
  • writing press releases and other promotional materials; and
  • liaising with translators, colleagues, and senior staff.

Additional duties will be assigned as needed.

Skills and Characteristics:

Our writer/editor will meet all of the following criteria:

  • Endorses and embodies GCCM values [1] and the Laudato Si’ paradigm in behavior and words; comfortable supporting and working in a faith-based environment. 
  • have a flawless command of grammar and a keenly tuned sense of style;
  • be able to confidently write a wide variety of materials, from websites and social media posts to policy documents and press releases; 
  • be able to communicate faith values such as compassion and unity while also communicating urgency and action;
  • exhibit grace under pressure and an ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at once; 
  • be able to quickly understand and respond to the wide range of opportunities and challenges inherent in communicating about highly visible Catholic projects on climate and the environment; and
  • be willing to participate in weekly spiritual practices with the team.

Additionally, our writer/editor will meet at least three of the following criteria:

  • have three to seven years’ worth of professional experience as a writer;
  • have a deep understanding of diverse regions;
  • have familiarity with sensitive communications in an advocacy organization;
  • have familiarity with Laudato Si’;
  • understand the distinct ways that sectors of the Catholic Church operate; and
  • have demonstrated experience working in a very fast-paced environment.

Languages: Native fluency in English is required, as all materials will be written and edited in English. Professional familiarity in Spanish is strongly preferred, as Spanish is currently the working language of the Special Projects team. 

Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience

Hours: 40 hours per week

Location: The work will be done remotely, with a preference for time zones in the Americas, Europe, and Africa. A strong Internet connection is required. 

Type: Full-time position

Start Date: As soon as possible

Work environment: This position will work remotely.
