The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities project targets specific geographic areas served by the Department’s Neighborhood Health Action Centers to provide comprehensive, multi-level strategies to encourage and support breastfeeding, addressing both gaps in breastfeeding education and practice as well as broader social determinants of health. Focus areas include creating Breastfeeding Friendly Practices in accordance with the NYS Breastfeeding Friendly Practice initiative, Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare/Day Care Homes, Workplace accommodations for nursing employees, establishment of the Baby Café® breastfeeding support model and strengthening existing breastfeeding coalitions.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The International Board-Certified Lactation Counselor NYC CBFC Baby Café Facilitator Consultant ensures the effective implementation of the Baby Café USA model of breastfeeding support. The consultant fosters and environment that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers can receive the information, education and support they need to meet their goals and provide a consistent, high standard of care. The IBCLC Facilitator provides practical 1-1 support to breastfeeding individuals, group education, as well as intake and referral for complex breastfeeding concerns, as well as other essential social services. The information below outlines the responsibilities of the IBCLC Consultant role.


RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     Operation of Baby Café® at East Harlem, NY:

·        Facilitate weekly Baby Café sessions; Conduct weekly 2-hour breastfeeding support group (Baby Café) sessions at the East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center, or virtually as approved by NYC DOHMH.

o  Engage participants in weekly topic and encourage dialogue amongst participants

·        Engage participants individually providing practical breastfeeding support addressing breastfeeding mechanics, such as latch, perceived milk insufficiency, plugged ducts, etc.

·        Address common topic s of concern of breastfeeding families such as return to work/ school, maintaining milk supply while away from child, advocating for support from family members, etc.

·        Assist with Baby Café attendance through promotion activities and follow up with Baby Café participants;

·        Ensure timely and accurate data collection.

·        Provide quality assurance of the Baby Café model as well as by completion all Baby Café® forms and other documents.


2.     Social Media Promotion of East Harlem Baby Café:

·        Manage East Harlem Baby Café Instagram page, at least 1 post per week.


3.     Performance Monitoring:

·        Monthly check-in calls to discuss problems, set goals and offer feedback. 

4.     Practice Designation:

·        Identify and engage clinical practices (OB/GYN, Family Med, Pediatrics, Midwifery) to provide technical assistance, professional in-service trainings and coaching to acquire New York State Department of Health designation as a Breastfeeding Friendly Practice


QUALIFICATIONS

·        A minimum of 2 years’ experience as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. Current certification is required.

·        High school diploma required. Two-year degree preferred.

·        A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with pregnant and parenting families.

·        Excellent communication, written and oral, as well as organizational skills.

·        Exceptional interpersonal skills.

·        Familiarity with Microsoft Office with an ability to become familiar wish agency-specific programs and software.

·        Ability to take initiative yet follow workplace policies.


POSITION DETAILS

Project Period: August 2021—January 2022, with possibility of extension

Location: All engagement is currently virtual and opportunities for in-person activities will be contingent on city and state health and safety guidelines

Hours: Approximately 6-8 hours/week

Compensation: Payment will be based on completion of deliverables; the deliverable amounts are based on a rate of $75/hour
