Education Leadership Coach


I. Overview of Teach Plus

The mission of Teach Plus is to empower excellent, experienced, and diverse teachers to take leadership over key policy and practice issues that advance equity, opportunity, and student success. The organization empowers expert teachers to advance policy changes and improve instructional leadership and teacher supports; trains and coaches teacher leaders to successfully mobilize and lead teacher teams; and empowers teacher leaders to be change agents among their peers and policy makers.  Since 2009, Teach Plus has trained thousands of teacher leaders across the country who are driving policy changes and improving the instructional practices of teachers to create an education system driven by equity, access, and excellence for all students.


II. Position Description 

Teach Plus’ Teacher-Led Practice Network (TLPN) Initiative is an innovative program that recruits, develops, and supports effective, experienced teachers to serve as Teacher Leaders.  The Education Leadership Coach will support and coach the Teacher Leaders leading Harmony Public Schools’ Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Harmony administrators, and Assistant Area Superintendents. The Education Leadership Coach will  work to build the capacity of Harmony Public Schools to support principals, assistant principals,  principal residents, and data coaches in supporting campus PLs.  The coach will build the capacity and support campus instructional leadership teams to effectively carry out their mission. PLC Leaders will host PLC meetings that are driven by a collaborative process with participants (described below) in order to focus on timely implementation gaps and learning needs. Each session will result in new or improved standards-aligned best practices for participants to test in their classrooms before the next session. Work with administrators and Assistant Area Superintendents will support them in understanding PLCs and distributing leadership to ensure that teachers can effectively lead PLCs. 


Teach Plus has identified five attributes that effective teacher leaders use to improve student outcomes across their schools, to which the Education Leadership Coach supports Teacher Leaders in developing in the following areas:

 

  • Skillful facilitators of adult learning
  • Evidence-based decision makers
  • Purpose-driven instructional leaders
  • School wide change agents
  • Equity advocates

An ideal candidate embodies these attributes and demonstrates strengths in developing these capacities in others.


The Education Leadership Coach will work with Teacher Leaders to develop standards-based, teacher-led professional collaboration sessions for their PLC participants. The coach will provide ongoing coaching to the teacher leaders selected and administrators to lead this work.  Expectations for this role are detailed in the descriptions below.


Coach and Support Campus Instructional Leadership Teams and Data Coaches

  • Administer a campus ILT needs assessment to assigned campuses 
  • Tailor individual campus ILT supports based on the needs of the campus. ( Support may include: individual or team coaching, targeted training to address areas of need, observations and feedback of ILT meetings, professional learning meetings, or data meetings.
  • Meet with principals, data coaches, and campus ILTs (in person or virtually) regularly to plan for upcoming campus ILT meetings, debrief previous meetings, and engage in leadership coaching and feedback.
  • Schedule and execute meetings with data coaches to review growth areas and establish targets and goals to increase collaboration, shared leadership, efficacy of data meetings, etc. (ex. ensuring data meetings include work samples)

Coach and Support Harmony Teacher Leaders

  • Foster High Functioning, High Impact Teacher-Leader led PLCs
  • Observe and strategically contribute in PLC meetings, when possible.  
  • Ensure that Teacher Leader initiative work is based in evidence and achieves desired impact.
  • Support the ongoing growth and development of Teacher Leaders by providing timely and growth oriented feedback: help plan, and also attend, observe (in-person or virtually via video recording), and debrief sessions and meetings
  • Meet with Teacher Leaders (in person or virtually) regularly to plan for upcoming PLC sessions, debrief previous session, and engage in leadership coaching and feedback
  • Support Teacher Leaders in ongoing practice sharing, analyzing problems of practice, and developing a professional learning network

Coach Professional Learning

Teach Plus invests heavily in the development of the coaching team, supporting travel to ensure that coaches learn from and with each other in the following ways:

  • Coach Orientation and support
  • Support in planning and facilitating the training for Teacher Leaders
  • Bi-weekly one-to-one support provided by the Instructional Practice Manager
  • Periodic observation and feedback on coaching work

Coach and Support Harmony Administrators and Assistant Area Superintendents

  • Foster High Functioning, High Impact Teacher-Leader led PLCs  and Campus Instructional  Leadership Teams by
  • Providing coaching to administrators and holding monthly meetings with Assistant Area Superintendent
  • Meet quarterly with members of the Harmony Curriculum team
  • Building relationships across your Harmony region and hosting additional trainings as needed

Participate in Teach Plus Texas Practice Work

  • As Teach Plus Texas secures new contracts, participate where possible (while meeting the requirements of the Harmony contract)
  • Help to share learning from the Texas practice work across the organization, and around the country, participating in activities such as presenting at conferences (as needed)

III. Qualifications

To be successful in this role, ideal candidates should have: 


  • 6+ years in the education field, with preference given to candidates who have both a teaching background and experience coaching teachers and school leaders in an urban environment
  • Preference given to leaders who have led instructionally transformational work in the urban context
  • Instructional coaching experience preferred
  • A relentless focus on data, including analysis and using it to inform instruction and make continuous improvement decisions
  • Experience in leadership development and facilitation of inquiry with teachers and/or school leaders
  • Experience creating and building professional development materials and trainings
  • Commitment to and previous experience with educational equity and a belief in the power of teachers to bring about positive change for all students

V.  Location, Start Date, and Term

This is a 80% virtual position, with a potential of 20% obligation to on-campus school visits. 

Although this position will be conducted virtually (primarily from a home office) applicants should live in Texas and be open to occasional travel within their city of residence. 


The start date for this position is September 7, 2021. This is a multi-year grant-funded position, with renewal on an annual basis based on performance, funding of continued work with partners, and needs of the organization.
