Staff Writer - Education
Write for Government Technology's Center for Digital Education and its related editorial products as directed by editors. Work across platforms – print, online, multimedia. The writer is responsible for developing and maintaining a network of sources applicable to his or her beat; pitching and developing story ideas for Web and magazine coverage; and writing stories that demonstrate thoughtful analysis of their subjects.
Essential Duties:
- Report and write Web stories, including news briefs and bylined articles in coordination with editors
- Report and write magazine features in coordination with editors
- Work across platforms - print, online, multimedia, data and visualizations
- Exercise sound news judgment
- Conceive and develop story ideas for the magazine and Web
- Nurture contacts and develop beat coverage as assigned
- Attend events and conferences and generate print articles and news items
Skills/Qualifications:
- Ability to produce clear, concise and accurately written articles
- Experience with story analytics and tools like Chartbeat and Google Analytics
- Strong knowledge of SEO and story promotion through social media platforms
- Knowledge of technology issues in K-12 and higher education preferred
- Knowledge of state and local government and technology
- Able to conduct phone and in-person interviews of government and industry sources
- Able to convey complex issues clearly and accurately
- Able to work under strict deadlines
- Knowledge of AP style
- Able to post through content management system and commercial social networks
