Senior Manager of Training and Education

The Society of Family Planning and the Society of Family Planning Research Fund (the Society) strive for just and equitable abortion and contraception, informed by science. We achieve our vision by serving as the source for science on abortion and contraception and providing support for abortion and contraception research. Our accomplishments include building a community of approximately 1,000 scholars and partners, serving as the academic home for subspecialists in complex family planning, producing 24 well-regarded clinical practice guidelines, and convening the premier scientific conference on abortion and contraception. We are also committed to funding research on abortion and contraception, and leveraging that research for impact.

The Senior Manager of Training and Education directs and oversees the centralized activities of the Fellowship in Complex Family Planning (the Fellowship), and related training and education activities. Launched in 1991, the Fellowship was recently recognized as a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology [1], a landmark milestone almost 30 years in the making. The person in this role is charged with championing the Fellowship as a new subspecialty, and supporting the Fellows, graduates of the Fellowship, and Directors of the Fellowship in their collective endeavors to: bridge the chasm between clinical evidence and practice, normalize complex family planning at the institutional level, and serve as public, academician leaders. The Society is a distributed team, and this position is remote. It is expected the person in this position will travel up to 25% of the time. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Specific responsibilities

1.   40%: Supporting Fellowship Directors in meeting the program requirements [2] for graduate medical education in complex family planning

Activities include, but are not limited to:

·      Providing the supports needed to ensure Directors have the resources they need to meet newly shared ACGME site requirements and ensure fellows meet newly shared graduation requirements. This requires deep understanding of the traditions of the Fellowship and the new program requirements, and may take the form of collating and sharing resources, convening trainings with partners, or connecting the Fellowship community to share internal resources.

·      Collating and disseminating wraparound resources to support Fellowship Directors in offering the research and clinical training needed to meet the program requirements.

·      Monitoring successes and challenges in meeting the program requirements and developing strategies for modeling successes and resolving challenges.

·      Hosting and facilitating quarterly meetings of the Fellowship Directors, and managing priorities and action items that emerge from meetings.

·      Developing and maintaining partnerships with ACGME, ABOG, ACOG, ABMS, NRMP and Ryan Program to ensure a well-connected and healthy network of support for achieving the goals of the subspecialty.

·      Developing and maintaining partnerships with the medical education and the medical subspecialty community to learn from their work and develop strategic collaborations.

·      In collaboration with the Executive Director, working closely with Board committees and workings groups that guide programmatic work for the Fellowship.

2. 15%: Sustaining the Fellowship community

Activities include, but are not limited to:

·      Engaging and connecting current and new Fellowship sites, and the fellows and Directors at each site.

·      Sustaining and promoting the engagement of fellows, graduated fellows, and Directors within the Fellowship community and within the Society community. Community engagement takes place through list serves, webinars, and in-person events.

·      Representing the Society at community events and sharing your passion for the leadership of subspecialists.

3. 15%: Creating and facilitating career development supports for Fellows and recent graduates

Activities include, but are not limited to:

·      Understanding and building programming responsive to ensuring graduated fellows have the resources needed for successful careers in academic medicine. Programming may address clinical training opportunities, navigating academic medicine careers, mentoring new leaders, and other topics.

·      Developing and implementing strategies for connecting graduated Fellows with career opportunities in academic medicine.

4. 10% Support the sustainability of the Fellowship program

Activities include, but are not limited to:

·      Understanding the new process by which Fellows apply to the Fellowship program, and leading efforts to recruit and retain Fellows from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and geographies. This work may involve direct recruitment efforts, providing resources to support equitable interviewing practices, and providing resources to support the wellness of fellows during training.

·      Creating original programming to support the financial sustainability of Fellowship sites. Topics to be addressed to support financial sustainability could include developing a business plan, negotiating cash pay prices, billing and coding practices, and advocating for adequate reimbursement. Strategies for doing so may include resource collation, trainings, and others.

5. 20%: Managing the programmatic, financial, and human resources needed to achieve goals

Activities include, but are not limited to:

·      Ensuring all programming has clear-eyed goals, is aligned with the Society’s overall strategy, and informed by our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision [3].

·      Developing and overseeing the budget for all Fellowship programing.

·      Leading report writing to financial supporters of the Fellowship.

·      Working closely with the Executive Director on fundraising for Fellowship programming.

·      Serving as an effective and committed team lead, following the management practices of the Management Center.

·      Contributing to a culture of learning, adaptation, and accountability.

·      Working closely with the evaluation team to collect and respond to meaningful and actionable learnings.

Qualifications

Highly-qualified applicants will meet many of the qualifications below, and have clarity on areas that are ongoing growth areas. In general, we seek a team member who brings:

·      Experience supporting transformational change initiatives

·      Palpable commitment to the Society’s vision, missions, and programs

·      Enthusiasm for innovation and developing programming with an eye on strategy

·      Solutions-orientation, with a passion for identifying pragmatic, equitable, and sustainable ways to tackle big and small challenges

·      Ability to juggle competing demands and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality

·      Track record of inspiring and motivating teams to meet goals and be accountable to goals; track record does not need to be demonstrated through a formal management position

·      Ability to make and communicate difficult decisions with empathy and clarity

·      Ability to listen to and engage with stakeholders’ needs and concerns; sees feedback as an invitation, not a burden

·      Ability to build and sustain authentic relationships across lines of difference

·      High level of computer literacy, including confidence using Google Apps, Box, Zoom, Word, Excel, Slack, and Adobe software tools

·      Ability to work independently and with remote teams; must live within an hour of a major airport

·      Willingness to pitch in as needed; we are a small nonprofit and everyone contributes
