Director, Business Operations – West Region


TNTP seeks a full-time Director of Business Operations to join the West region of the Consulting team. This Director level position is based in a home office anywhere in the U.S. with a preference for Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and Utah and is available immediately. Occasional travel is required.

What You’ll Do

Vice Presidents are responsible for planning and managing the impact and sustainability of TNTP’s business lines in their region, including identifying revenue opportunities, developing budgets & staffing plans, tracking financial performance, and updating projections on an ongoing basis.

The Director, Business Operations will serve as the primary business operations thought partner and support for the Vice President and Partners in the West region, advising and supporting them in all aspects of proposal development, financial analysis, and resource planning, including:

Regional Strategy and Proposal Development (45%)

  • Partner with TNTP leadership to understand business goals and services and develop and monitor business, client, and service strategies
  • Develop operational systems and processes that support a long-term regional vision and strategy
  • Anticipate business operations challenges and opportunities across the region, adapting as necessary to support the Vice President and Partners in ensuring the region meets impact goals, financial goals, and revenue and expense targets
  • Proactively research, identify and track potential business development and fundraising opportunities in Salesforce and maintain competitor analyses
  • Identify and coordinate both business- and region-specific marketing needs and collaborate with other regions and TNTP’s marketing and fundraising team to meet those needs
  • Project manage the completion of new proposals and develop project budgets and staff plans using the pricing templates and tools developed by TNTP’s Central Operations team.

Budgeting and Financial Analysis (45%)

  • Develop budgets and staffing plans for the region and add proposed budgets and forecasts directly into Adaptive and Salesforce. This includes budgets and staffing plans for both individual projects/contracts and the larger portfolio of projects and budget lines managed by the Vice President.
  • Effectively use and adapt standard reports available in Workday and Adaptive to support budget and staffing plans
  • Monitor progress against the target budget throughout the year through monthly budget vs. actual reports and forecasts
  • Perform ad hoc financial analysis, and reporting including scenario planning for new and existing business opportunities, staffing metrics and margin analysis

Monitoring and Knowledge Management (10%)

  • Monitor progress against contract and business line goals, in coordination with TNTP’s Impact team 
  • Support knowledge management activities, in coordination with TNTP’s Practices team to ensure use and contribution to best practices  
  • Contribute to and align your own and Vice President/Partner’s work with the evolution of business operations best practices

We expect the Director, Business Operations to:

  • Be a natural problem-solver. You can leverage your experience in education to quickly build a strong understanding of TNTP’s service offerings and make connections across services. You’ll use your analytical and problem-solving skills to quickly identify challenges, analyze the root causes, and propose complex solutions and aligned tools, processes and systems to support TNTP staff and evolving needs.
  • Proactively collaborate with and advise TNTP staff. You’ll regularly partner with staff at all levels of the organization, including TNTP leadership. You will develop and leverage your understanding of TNTP’s business context to advise TNTP’s Vice Presidents and Partners on the most effective financial, business development and resource planning practices.
  • Be thorough and accurate. You will be tasked with reviewing budget data and providing detailed financial analysis. You will need strong project management and organizational skills, helping you manage multiple priorities with attention to detail.
  • Love Data. You enjoy analyzing financial, impact, and market data to drive strategy and decision making and can present findings in a clear, actionable way to a variety of audiences
  • Draft compelling narratives in response to research. Whether in writing or on the phone, you can synthesize and summarize the results of a landscape analysis or a state’s legislative priorities in education and can strategically weave that information into compelling proposals and responses to RFPs.
  • Be willing to step up to the plate. You are eager to contribute and learn, willing to proactively generate solutions to potential issues, and make ongoing process improvements.
  • Comfort with new technology. You have experience with or the ability and desire to learn new systems and reporting skills using Workday, Adaptive, Salesforce, Excel, and Tableau
  • Build relationships. You have an ability to connect and build relationships with diverse communities and stakeholders within your region. Bilingual abilities are a plus.  
  • Embrace and model cross-cultural agility.  Authentic self-reflection, self- awareness, and high emotional intelligence are central to who you are, and you utilize these skills to contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
