Communications and Media Manager


I. Overview of Teach Plus

The mission of Teach Plus is to empower excellent, experienced, and diverse teachers to take leadership over key policy and practice issues that affect their students’ success. The organization empowers expert teachers to advance policy changes and improve instructional leadership and teacher supports; develops and coaches teacher leaders to successfully mobilize and lead teacher teams; and empowers teacher leaders to be change agents among their peers and policy makers.  Since 2009, Teach Plus has trained thousands of teacher leaders across the country who are driving policy changes and improving the instructional practices of teachers to create an education system driven by equity, access, and excellence for all students.


II. Position Responsibilities

At Teach Plus, strong, effective communications is a key part of our mission. As Communications and Media Manager, you will join a vibrant, creative team focused on maximizing positive visibility of Teach Plus and Teach Plus teacher leaders in earned and on social media, and on building Teach Plus’ leadership platform with policy makers, influencers, funders, the press, and the public at-large. 


Rapid Response Communications Center

Teach Plus has a proven track record of developing rich teacher voice and teacher-led, research-informed policy recommendations and we are uniquely positioned to deepen public understanding and buy-in of smart, equity-focused solutions driven by excellent educators. With the new administration in the White House and the Democratic control of Congress, there is a renewed focus on teaching and learning and a new commitment to rebuilding the education system at the local, state, and federal level. To leverage these opportunities, we’re launching a Rapid Response Communications Center to quickly and nimbly elevate excellent, innovative teacher work, voice, and perspectives on key policy issues to steer state-level and national discourse, boost visibility, and drive impact.


Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Media, you will work closely with the communications team, and with other collaborators at Teach Plus, on media outreach and a range of communications products in order to influence national discourse about education. The Communications and Media Manager will have the following primary responsibilities:


Issue Briefs

  • Act as lead content generator, distilling key Teach Plus findings and recommendations from our body of research and knowledge into easily digestible issue briefs for policy makers, influencers, and the media.
  • Highlight the data and teachers’ solutions from across our regions on issues such as testing and accountability, teacher pipeline and diversity, school finance equity, closing the achievement gap, and more. 
  • Work with Teach Plus regions and the national policy and research teams to maximize opportunities to create and disseminate issue briefs. 
  • Develop new pathways of disseminating the issue briefs to the media and decision makers.

Earned Media and Media Outreach

  • Collaborate with VP of Communications and Media in developing regional and national media strategy in alignment with Teach Plus advocacy and impact goals.
  • Conduct media outreach across our regions and nationally to generate stories that highlight Teach Plus best practices, specific work, and solutions on state-level issues.
  • Develop story ideas for regional and national media that amplify Teach Plus advocacy and Teach Plus teacher leaders’ work and highlight promising Teach Plus practices missing from the conversation about educational equity.  
  • In collaboration with the communications team and regional staff, coordinate interviews and spokespeople, including Teach Plus staff and teacher leaders.

Content Generation and Edit

  • Collaborate with the communications team in developing external products in Teach Plus’ communications portfolio, including Annual Report, regional and national research reports and memos, and more.  
  • Collaborate with the communications team in creating and editing content for teachplus.org

Project Management

  • Project manage production of issue briefs.
  • Manage communication between national and regional teams to ensure smooth workflow of Rapid Response Communications Center.
  • Support the work of the communications department, including writing, editing, coordination with like-minded organizations, event support, and other communications needs.

III. Qualifications

A successful candidate will have these qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years experience at a communications/public relations agency, in-house PR, or equivalent. 
  • Excellent written and editing skills, with experience working on research-driven publications.
  • Experience conceptualizing and executing effective media campaigns and a track record of pitching and placing stories.
  • Experience in issue-driven communications. Interest in K-12 education issues, a plus.
  • Experience and comfort using social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. 
  • Knowledge of Salesforce, Campaign Monitor, and Meltwater media database.

V. Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Teach Plus offers a  generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 3% matching 401k plan, disability and life insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts for medical and childcare expenses. Teach Plus offers generous time off benefits including 15 vacation days, 3 personal days, 5 sick days, 11 holidays, and winter break. Additionally, Teach Plus offers parental leave and a 4-week paid sabbatical for every five years of service.


VI.  Location and start date

This position will be conducted virtually (primarily from a home office).  The tentative start date is September 7, 2021.
