ABOUT THE POSITION   

EL has gained national recognition as an organization providing high quality K-8 curriculum and professional development on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The English Language Development (ELD) Lead Curriculum Designer: Grades K-5 will lead a team of designers to design and write high quality engaging ELD curriculum that integrates English language development and content-based literacy for Grades K-5. A curriculum design leader with ELD expertise will lead of team of ELD curriculum designers at all grade levels to build aligned content for a new ELD block. This position represents an exciting and challenging opportunity for individuals who:

  • Have proven leadership experience
  • Have proven experience working with English language learners and designing content for ELD time, specifically in the primary and elementary grades
  • Understand the backward design process
  • Understand diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism and culturally responsive education as it pertains to curriculum design
  • Have deep understanding of the CA ELD standards

This position will be 40 hours per week beginning in July 2021 and finishing in February 2023. Work will be paid at an hourly rate.

RESPONSIBILITIES    

This position will report to the Director of Curriculum Design, and will:

  • Participate in virtual professional learning with our experts, and also potentially in person over the course of the project.
  • Lead the backward design, writing, and revision of one-hour daily lessons for multiple levels of English language proficiency aligned to four content-based literacy modules at a given grade level.
  • Plan and facilitate team meetings, honoring EL’s organizational norms; building relationships; proactively communicating if issues with the group or individuals arise; naming milestones and celebrating successes; promoting reflection and ongoing improvement.
  • Serve as ELD project manager: Delegate tasks to team members and hold team members accountable in terms of tasks and timeline.
  • Coach and provide feedback to team members respectfully in a way that leads to growth.
  • Serve as the main liaison with EL’s Curriculum Design Team and experts. 
  • Participate in design and review of documents at the module, unit and lesson level.
  • Give and receive kind, specific, helpful feedback within and across grade level teams. 
  • Support schools piloting new materials in Spring/Summer 2022.
  • As needed, carry out special projects or problem solving as assigned by the Director of Curriculum Design.

 CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS 

A successful candidate will have:

  • A master’s degree in education, specialization in teaching English Language Learners (preferred)
  • At least three years of leadership experience, supervising teams of three or more people
  • Five or more years of experience teaching English Language Learners during ELD time at the K-5 level, and/or coaching K-5 teachers to support ELLs, bilingual education programs, and/or dual language programs
  • Deep knowledge of ELL pedagogy as it relates to K-5 developing literacy skills and K-5 bilingual/multilingual language development
  • A commitment to advocating for equity and access to rich education programs focused on research-based best instructional practices for English Language Learners
  • Curriculum design expertise (backward design, holding the big picture and purpose, assessment, project-based learning, addressing CCSS standards and “shifts”) 
  • Commitment to EL’s model of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and character development
  • Familiarity with EL’s K-8 ELA curriculum preferred and/or familiarity with Dr. Lily Wong Fillmore’s ‘Juicy Sentences’ work
  • Extraordinary written and verbal communications skills (phone, email, in-person, video conference)
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to manage complex tasks and tight deadlines independently and proactively
  • Keen eye for detail and ability to triage and problem-solve
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills (particular to the “curriculum genre”)
  • Strong self-motivation and self-management skills; an effective independent worker
  • Ability to effectively collaborate flexibly in the virtual environment while working toward a common goal
  • Commitment to self-reflection and a growth mindset as a member of a high-functioning team

Completive rate offered, not eligible for benefits.
