Social Worker, Virtual Summer Math Program Nyc

This summer, lead the growth of an intense, vibrant community of young scholars in mathematics.

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics, a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., invites applications for its summer Social Worker position. You'll be a part of the leadership team for our five-week BEAM Discovery program, which gives everyone a chance to excel in mathematics. At BEAM Discovery, students in the summer after 6th grade learn advanced math and create deep friendships in a close-knit summer environment.

The program will take place June 30-August 10, 2021 (with students present 7/5-8/6). Due to COVID-19, this year's program will be held entirely virtually; BEAM can provide any technology and other materials you may need for the role.

The Social Worker is on the program’s leadership team, helping our staff create a supportive social environment at the program. You will report directly to the Site Director. General responsibilities include:

  • Spending time with students to build relationships with them, among them, and also among students and staff.
  • Providing counseling and support for students, especially helping those students who are having difficulty adjusting to the program or who may simply need someone they trust to talk to.
  • Monitoring student absences.
  • Providing guidance to other staff as they work to address and support mental health and other student needs.
  • Communicating with families about student progress.
  • Running one to two activities each day.
  • Substituting for absent counselors.
  • Staffing main office and answering student questions.
  • Monitoring Open Math Time.

All applicants should have an MSW or a comparable credential (with a valid license) as well as experience supervising and coordinating kids. Beyond that background, we are looking for someone who is dedicated to creating an exceptional experience for students; who can be a strong leader among the staff; and who can communicate well with both students and parents. Additional pluses include some level of counseling experience, summer program experience, fluency in Spanish or other common languages among our families, an interest in mathematics, and experience with making decisions under time pressure.

The Director of Student Life must be available M-F for our entire session dates: June 30-August 10, 2021. In general, weekends have no commitments. We expect that you'll have to be available approximately 8:30am-4:30pm (with shifts negotiated with the Site Director), although depending on circumstances those hours may shift. There may also be a few hours of planning before the summer to coordinate the counselor team's activities or to prepare to lead parts of staff training.

The salary is $6,500 for the summer. Beyond the salary, we hope that you will also see the program as we do: a labor of love that reaches the students most in need, and a program with the potential to have a transformative effect on achievement in mathematics and related fields.
