Seasonal Staff-Program Assistant/Senior Program Assistant


POSITION TITLE:  Program Assistant 

POSITION TYPE:  Seasonal Staff 

LOCATION:  Remote – US 

DURATION:  Approximately six (6) months (June 14th to ~December 10th) 

 

Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) is a leader in international youth development, creating a world in which young people realize their full potential as leaders and global citizens.  We provide extraordinary opportunities for youth to design and lead projects in collaboration with US and Latin American peers and partner organizations across the Americas. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AMIGOS’ implementation of the Youth Ambassadors program remains virtual.  The program will connect young leaders from across the Americas and channel their energy into working together to enhance their communities.  They will create projects that address the most pressing issues during this global crisis while building a network of like-minded individuals committed to creating positive change. The virtual exchange is designed to activate this energetic network of change-makers by giving them the space to build new communities, both globally and locally, while they learn what it means to be a leader. Through online modules, virtual meet ups, and mentorship, the exchange will foster different strategic approaches to cultural connection, project development, and personal leadership. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

This is a unique opportunity to mentor youth from throughout the United States, support youth to take action in their local communities, and learn and practice online facilitation!  The Program Assistant is responsible for supporting participants during two, four-week virtual exchanges and during the Follow-on phase in a decreased capacity. The Program Assistant role will shift slightly from one exchange to the next.  During one exchange, they will directly mentor 6-7 youth participants from the US, guiding participants through exchange content and working with participants to problem-solve challenges.  During the other exchange, their role will shift to logistical support.  Their responsibilities will include collecting data from participants, coordinating external reporting of our program highlights, and maintaining whole-group communication. 

The Program Assistant reports to the Senior Program Assistant and the United States Program Coordinators.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

During Training 

  • Complete an interactive, virtual training via Zoom prior to program launch 

During Program Implementation 

Each Program Assistant will serve in both of the Facilitator and Logistical Supporter roles at different times.  Their responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Facilitator: 

  • Facilitate assigned small group activities during the program 
  • Mentor a small group of participants from the US 
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings 2-3 times each week 
  • Occasionally join program activities as an observer 
  • Actively communicates with Lead Program Assistants 

Logistical Supporter: 

  • Serve as virtual “host families” to adult participants from Latin America 
  • Collect artifacts (screenshots, recordings, quotes, etc…) for exchange reporting 
  • Support with Zoom logistics (screen sharing, screen recording, breakout rooms, etc…) during activities 
  • Serve as experts in the schedule, remind participants of “housekeeping items,” take attendance during activities 
  • Create Zoom links, build modules in CANVAS

  • Monitor and encourage engagement of a small group of US participants post-exchange 
  • Hold bi-weekly check-ins with a small group of US participants and serve as a mentor, thinking partner, and resource, as they plan their community-based initiative (CBI) 
  • Maintain communication with Program Coordinators regarding their participants’ progress 

 

General Expectations Throughout Employment 

  • Understand, uphold, and enforce the AMIGOS Standards of Conduct and other policies and procedures 
  • Follow expectations for positive and professional working relationships 
  • Complete possible additional duties as assigned by Program Coordinators

QUALIFICATIONS 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Fluent in English with an intermediate level of Spanish 
  • Must be 18 years or older and willing to undergo a background check 
  • Experience volunteering and/or working in community engagement in the US and Latin America 
  • Excellent group facilitation skills, particularly with high-school-aged youth 
  • Previous experience working directly with high-school-aged youth of diverse backgrounds 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel; willing to learn to manage an online learning platform 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Alumna/us of the Youth Ambassadors Program OR experience as an educator, camp counselor, or youth coach 

 

COMPENSATION, PROGRAM DATES, AND REQUIRED HOURS 

Compensation: $15 hourly wage 

  • Training & Program Set Up: June 14th – June 25th (approximately 20 total hours) 
  • Virtual Exchanges: June 28th - August 20th (up to 20 hours/week) 
  • Program Follow-on: August 23rd – Early December (up to 10 hours/week)
