Senior Digital Content Officer


 The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is a collaborative, patients’ needs-driven, non-profit drug research and development (R&D) organization that is developing new treatments for neglected diseases (www.dndi.org [1]) and is running the largest clinical trial in Africa for mild- to -moderate-cases of COVID-19.

After 15 years of sustained growth, DNDi has built a team of approximately 200 full-time employees working across nine offices (Geneva, Rio de Janeiro, Kinshasa, Nairobi, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Tokyo, and Cape Town). In 2008, DNDi opened an affiliate office in New York City to serve as the headquarters for DNDi North America. A registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, DNDi North America works to strengthen and expand scientific, policy advocacy, partner development, communications, and in particular, fundraising efforts in the region to enhance DNDi’s global impact. The office operates under the direction of the DNDi North America Board of Directors.

The External Affairs Department aims to design, implement, and evaluate Policy, Advocacy, Communications, and Fundraising strategies. Within the External Affairs Department, the Communications Team ensures wide, timely, and strategic dissemination of information on DNDi and research in the field of neglected diseases. Target audiences include national and international political leaders, the scientific community, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, donor countries and organizations, civil society organizations, and the media.


Purpose of the position

The Digital Content Designer/Senior Officer is responsible for planning, developing, and designing digital content to build DNDi’s digital audience and online brand, increase awareness about neglected patient needs, and promote DNDi and its messages.

While managed by the Head of Media and Content currently based in New York, this position is firmly interlinked within a global Communications team and will have daily contact with communications focal points in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. With close cooperation with Communications colleagues around the world, the Digital Content Designer/Senior Officer will provide the creative drive to ensure DNDi delivers a wide range of multimedia content for multiple audiences.


Specific Job Responsibilities

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Digital content development (70-80%)

Propose, develop, and design digital multimedia content to build DNDi’s digital audience and online brand by:

  • Producing a steady editorial flow of compelling, human-focused content for DNDi’s digital channels in close collaboration with Communications team colleagues around the world – based on DNDi research milestones, news hooks, communications strategies, ad hoc campaigns, and an “in-house” calendar of content that can drive audience engagement
  • Proactively carrying out all stages of content production from conception/brainstorming to creation and dissemination
  • Scripting, storyboarding, and then producing multiple types of digital videos
  • Planning, commissioning, editing, and repackaging raw content developed by Communications team colleagues into multimedia content such as social videos, graphics, and other shareable content (see below)
  • Maintaining and continuously updating repository of templates for graphics and videos to create DNDi’s digital branding and facilitate simple digital production tasks by other Communications team members
  • Actively contributing to an editorial calendar for content production to ensure suitable timing and consistent outputs
  • Potentially leading on content collection trips locally and if needed, globally (shooting video and photo depending on skill sets)
  • Tracking and scoping changes in social media networks and the overall social media landscape to incorporate new content ideas and opportunities, design trends, and posting strategies for better audience engagement and performance
  • Managing digital tools such as Dropbox, Vimeo, Slack, and Google Calendar to coordinate content production
  • Working with agencies and service providers for larger projects 

Contribution to content strategy (10-20%)

Contribute to overall DNDi’s communications and positioning by proposing content, messages, and dissemination strategies that are relevant and engaging to target audiences and fit with DNDi’s strategy and priorities, by:

  • Contributing to communications campaigns and key communications moments with a creative, audience-focused, and performance-oriented approach
  • Helping ensure all audiovisual content expresses DNDi messages and branding
  • Contributing to strategy, messages, and content for ad hoc digital campaigns
  • Identifying needs for content collection together with global communications colleagues and assisting in aspects of content collection trips, including objectives, messages, and logistics (briefings, contracts, schedules, etc.) throughout the world
  • Staying up-to-date with DNDi’s projects and the overall global health landscape to identify opportunities and ensure content is on message and meets organizational strategic goals
  • Contributing to the social media strategy by identifying target audiences and engaging in digital activation
  • Providing Communications team members with ideas on new content types for production, and dissemination and staying abreast of latest digital trends and storytelling tools to build knowledge and quality contributions from the team
  • Working regularly with colleagues from the digital team to monitor performance of audiovisual content in different channels and with different audiences and propose ways to learn, adapt and improve reach and engagement of DNDi content 

Dissemination channels include:

  • Social media channels (DNDi corporate and individual channels, and partner channels)
  • DNDi global and regional websites
  • Corporate e-newsletters

Types of content include:

  • Short web animations and videos
  • Graphics, infographics, and photo content
  • “Story” content for Instagram and potentially other channels
  • Blog posts and web stories
  • Longer documentary-style videos (by working with third-party companies)
  • Templates for e-newsletters

Multimedia Content Management (10%)

  • Lead maintenance of DNDi’s Digital Asset Management (DAM) system storing photo and video assets
  • Ensure that content in the DAM is correctly tagged, well-organized and used strategically for content creation in line with editorial plan and with best practice in terms of personal data management practices
  • Work closely with Communications team members to ensure that content is uploaded on time, in compliance with regulations and DNDi guidelines, as well as provided with captions
  • Champion the DAM within the organization and provide training to staff as needed
  • Act as a focal point for content production processes & file transfers to ensure an efficient output delivery system from content collection to production.

North America-specific Communications (10%)

  • Develop North America-specific digital content for fundraising purposes, including e- newsletters, mass mailings, emails appeals, and e-marketing, and assist North America Communications Manager on other North America specific communications initiatives as needed
  • Assist and potentially lead content collection (photo/video shoots) in North America and where needed, in other areas where DNDi works

Reporting line

This position reports to the Head of Media and Content in New York, with the Digital Communication Senior Manager in Geneva as a contributing manager

 

Interactions

  • Works in close co-operation with colleagues globally, in particular the Communications Managers in offices in Rio, Nairobi, New Delhi, and consultants in Kuala Lumpur, Kinshasa, Cape Town to drive digital content and enable DNDi to reach its digital communication objectives.
  • Able to work remotely and independently through multiple time zones to manage complicated projects, occasionally outside traditional working hours
  • Collaborators, counterparts, and service providers are mainly in the functional area in and outside DNDi to get information, guidance, and feedback or to enlist cooperation. Works on the organization of representation of DNDi at smaller events and with external stakeholders of same equivalent level

  • Excellent design skills in Adobe Creative suite (Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Audition)

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years’ relevant experience
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and matrix structure
  • Experience producing consistent weekly/monthly content and managing or actively contributing to an editorial calendar
  • Experience of working in public and private sector is highly desirable
