About FuelEd

FuelEd is a non-profit organization whose mission is to grow emotionally intelligent educators who build relationship-driven schools. Our vision is a world where educator training and support - and the very definition of an educator - is reimagined to prioritize educators' emotional intelligence, emotional health, and interpersonal skills.

FuelEd serves as a critical missing piece, not only in educator preparation but in the field of social-emotional learning. Whereas many approaches to social-emotional learning focus on educator knowledge and behavior, FuelEd supports educators’ personal transformation so they can develop secure relationships that drive optimal learning and development. We firmly believe that educators cannot possibly grow students socially and emotionally if they have not developed socially and emotionally first, nor can they be truly “trauma-informed” if they have not processed and acknowledged their own trauma.

Our Culture

What makes FuelEd unique isn’t just the work we do, it’s how we do it. We organize and manage ourselves in deep alignment with the values we promote in the world. Several management practices and principles have shaped our internal culture1, but the one that best describes us is chronicled in Frederic LaLoux’s book, Reinventing Organizations, where he profiles “Teal Organizations” that are defined by three innovative principles. At FuelEd, we embody these principles in the following ways:

We are self-managed. Instead of a traditional management hierarchy, FuelEd utilizes decentralized management whereby authority and decision-making are distributed throughout self-organizing teams and roles. This structure creates a fulfilling work environment where the person closest to an issue has the authority and support to make decisions. Instead of dependence on a single Executive Director, this structure leans heavily on consent-based decision-making and peer accountability leading to an organization where individual genius and creativity is unleashed and the organization as a whole is more resilient and flexible in the face of challenges and opportunities.

We value wholeness: FuelEd believes that human potential is squandered when people are unable to be their true selves in the workplace. Therefore, we strive to create a consistent set of practices that encourage us to bring all of who we are to work. We do this by creating and maintaining a culture of truth, where feedback is invited, given, and received freely. Our culture places a premium on adult development and was inspired largely by the book An Everyone Culture as well as our own curriculum, which develops the social and emotional lives of educators. FuelEd has already witnessed the ways in which this congruence between our “outsides” and “insides” has bolstered the organization’s internal talent—both quality and retention—and aided the organization in better reaching its mission.

Evolutionary purpose: FuelEd has a life and sense of direction of its own. Instead of trying to predict and control the future, we listen and understand what the organization is drawn to become with flexibility, openness, and reflectiveness combined with ambition, drive, and action. Our individual team members also have a life and sense of direction of their own. When we as individuals live our purpose every day, both the individual and the organization benefit from the gifts of our best selves. As a result, we seek team members whose individual callings align with the purpose and mission of the organization.

1The ideas that have inspired FuelEd internal culture are included in Holacracy (Robertson), We the People (Buck and Villines), Reinventing Organizations (Laloux) An Everyone Culture (Kegan and Lahey), and NextJump, a “deliberately developmental organization” chronicled in An Everyone Culture.
