Communications Manager

About Advance Native Political Leadership Action Fund:

Advance Native Political Leadership Action Fund (Advance) was founded to address the historical traumas, present realities, and future prospects of Native peoples in the United States. Advance is the only national Native American-led organization working to address the vast disparity and unique barriers that exist for Indigenous people in U.S. politics. We are focused on increasing the visibility and representation of Native Americans, especially Indigenous women, in elected offices at all levels by recruiting and training emerging candidates and leaders, and building and connecting national and state-based networks for political organizing. By expanding Native representation in elected office, we actively shape a future where our government is truly reflective of all our communities. Native peoples are ready to serve in leadership with talents rooted in values that make our ancestors proud.

About the role:

Advance Native Political Leadership Action Fund is looking for a Communications Manager to join our growing team. We are looking for somebody interested in moving beyond cookie cutter communications, press, and social media strategies as they have traditionally been done; someone who enjoys setting the curve rather than following it. This role is right for someone with a passion for creating accessible content around the issues impacting Indian Country, and who is skilled at deconstructing complex narratives. If you have experience developing communication strategies that bring forward the arcs of our ancestors to build power for future generations, this position might be for you.

To be successful in this role you should have the following experience:

  • 5+ years of digital organizing and comms experience. Specifically, demonstrated experience with social media, press, etc. that is bold and different.
  • 3+ years of experience building relationships/ working with media.
  • A deep understanding and awareness of culture, keeping you ahead of the curve in current and evolving communications spaces. Excitement and creative ideas around building a national Native organization from scratch and establishing a clear and defined voice for Advance’s work.
  • Comfort speaking to a variety of audiences with confidence and authenticity, always demonstrating deep mission and values alignment.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and publishing compelling content for social media channels and press.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results; think strategically, proactively and creatively.
  • Experience working with tribes or within Indian Country or a strong willingness to learn, specifically the ability to story tell and educate on issues within Indian Country in an accessible way.
  • Ability to creatively advance nuanced storytelling, and distill complex historical narratives in accessible ways.
  • Demonstrated willingness to be a team player with experience working in fast-paced, evolving environments that require lots of collaboration and an all hands on deck approach.
  • Comfort working remotely or in person, experience managing teams/ staff remotely.

We hope you bring one or more of these skills:

  • Experience managing and publishing content on social media channels, Wordpress, and/ or other CMS.
  • Experience creating graphic design content i.e. infographics.
  • Experience developing and/ or executing events or training programs, specifically focused on media.
  • Experience working on political campaigns or with candidates directly or through project based work.
  • Media and public speaking experience.

After 6 months, success in this role looks like:

  • Development and initial implementation of a functional and innovative communications and digital organizing strategy.
  • Developed and strengthened relationships with a broad network of media contacts.
  • Successfully representing the organization as a spokesperson in media and public facing spaces.
  • The development of compelling narratives around issues within Indian Country and the ability to convey them in a variety of formats.
