About Project HEAL

Project HEAL is the only major direct service nonprofit in the U.S. focused on equitable healthcare access for people with eating disorders. Our mission is to break down systemic, healthcare, and financial barriers to eating disorder treatment. We deliver our mission through four (4) core Treatment Support programs: Insurance Navigation, Treatment Placement, Cash Assistance, and Clinical Assessment. We are also involved in research, education, and advocacy efforts at the national level. Our vision is that everyone with an eating disorder has the resources and opportunities they need to recover.

Project HEAL was founded in 2008 by two 15 year olds who themselves had just recovered from their eating disorders, united by their dream to raise funds for others who could not otherwise afford treatment. Since then, we’ve helped hundreds of people access treatment (and counting!), and we’re active in the movement to reform and transform the American mental health care system to work for everyone, not just the privileged few.

Role Overview

The Development & Marketing Manager role is an extremely important one on the Project HEAL team. This person will work in tandem with the CEO, supporting Project HEAL’s efforts around two critical and intertwined pillars of work: fundraising and community engagement. As a nonprofit, we rely entirely on charitable giving. In turn, our ability to fundraise relies on our ability to effectively find and connect with people and organizations who share our values and can support our work. The ideal candidate for this role will be eager to understand how our marketing & community engagement efforts can help expand our sustainable revenue, and in turn, expand our capacity to achieve our mission.

The Development & Marketing Manager will supervise one part-time staff and at least two volunteers, as well as support two of Project HEAL’s Board Committees (Development and MarCom). This role will report directly to the CEO, and depending on performance, will have ample room to grow into a more senior position within the organization.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the CEO to update existing development plan to accomplish Project HEAL’s strategic growth goals
  • Field inquiries from potential donors, fundraisers, and partners looking for additional information on getting involved or making a gift; serve as primary point of contact for donors up to $1-$4,999
  • Understand current opportunity pipeline, projections, and goals; work closely with CEO and Development Coordinator to build a robust opportunity pipeline sufficient to meet or exceed annual revenue goals; provide accurate reports to inform CEO’s annual budget proposals and decisions
  • Actively manage foundation funding opportunities, lead peer-to-peer fundraising efforts, and provide operational support for corporate partnerships
  • Provide CEO with administrative support and strategic guidance on fundraising best practices — particularly around individual major donor strategies
  • Think creatively about donor stewardship and execute a plan to meaningfully connect with donors and foster a sense of community
  • Oversee a multi-channel and multi-priority marketing and communications strategy that successfully raises awareness, builds community, and ultimately inspires people to support Project HEAL’s mission whether by donating or volunteering
  • Work closely with Development Coordinator to research, design, and execute our annual report, newsletters, online campaigns, direct mail & email fundraising, and email marketing strategies
  • Create on-brand and values-aligned content for website, printed materials, events, external partnerships, and social media as needed
  • Effectively collaborate with other Project HEAL staff, board members, and volunteers to impactfully share mission- and program-relevant content with external audiences
  • Provide support to CEO around press opportunities, speaking engagements, conferences, and events where CEO is representing Project HEAL
  • Support impact and outcome tracking across the organization; provide accurate and actionable reports on both development and marketing effectiveness
  • Routinely update training guides and SOP for development & marketing functions
  • Coordinate Development and MarCom committee meetings, support the Committee Chairs, and provide project management for strategies as determined by the committees
  • Supervise PT Development Coordinator and work closely with them on maintaining records & reporting in Salesforce, income processing, monthly financial reporting and reconciliation, online fundraising campaigns in Classy, foundation grant applications, corporate gift matching, blog management, email marketing in Mailchimp, website content in Squarespace, fundraising event support, donor prospecting and research
  • Supervise Development Volunteer and work closely with them on donor stewardship, gift acknowledgements, data entry, quality control, donor prospecting and research
  • Supervise Ambassador Lead Volunteer and work closely with them on peer-to-peer fundraising efforts and grassroots volunteer engagement
  • Work closely with Social Media Volunteer on producing and publishing mission-, vision- and values-aligned content for Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter

Role Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • At least two years of experience in either fundraising, sales, or marketing with a track record of success in revenue growth, project management, national community engagement, large-scale marketing campaigns, and/or social media strategy

  • Experience in Google Suite, Salesforce (CRM), Classy (fundraising platform), Mailchimp (e-marketing), Squarespace (website), Canva (graphic design), Trello (project management) or equivalents strongly preferred
  • Must live in the U.S. and have the ability to work remotely (space, wifi, etc)

About You

  • A natural people person, who cares about relationships and intuitively understands human behavior
  • A creative problem-solver and strategic decision maker, who sees both the forest and the trees
  • A strong time-manager with the ability to coordinate several projects and triage priorities appropriately
  • A confident and positive team player who is transparent about workload and workflow, is willing to chip in where needed, and who can ask for help
  • A strong verbal and written communicator
  • Personally aligned with Project HEAL’s organizational values
  • Everyone Deserves Recovery: We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to recover and has the right to quality mental health care — regardless of age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, size, ability, or financial means. We are committed to empathy and treating all humans with dignity.
  • Equity Matters: We exist to create equity in the eating disorder treatment landscape, and we know this means we must be willing to be disruptive in the process. We’re committed to anti-racism, anti-oppression, gender equity, and taking action to create justice.
  • Healing is Possible: We believe that full recovery from an eating disorder is both possible and well worth the fight. We know that treatment is only part of the puzzle, but very often it is an essential one. Our belief in healing is not limited to individuals — we believe that systemic healing is possible, and we know that oppressive frameworks must be dismantled and reimagined for true healing to be complete.
  • All Bodies are Good Bodies: We stand against any and all beliefs, biases, or messages that compare bodies against constructed ideals, equate health with appearance, define beauty, or assign value or worth to any individuals over others. We are anti-diet and fat-positive. We are committed to body liberation in all its forms.
  • We’re Better Together: We believe that our mission is not possible without partnership, community, and connection. We are committed to always listening, always learning, staying innovative, practicing flexibility, and fostering resilience.
