The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Co-Director, Education and Justice Transformation (Justice Transformation). 

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position

We seek an experienced campaign-focused Co-Director for the Education and Justice Transformation program, to lead the Justice Transformation half of the program. This Co-Director will lead our affiliates and network in designing, implementing, and winning campaigns that defund the police, decriminalize and decarcerate communities of color across the country. The goals and responsibilities of this position include developing and leading our network’s campaigns, organizing, and advocacy strategy (at the federal, state, and local levels) aimed at shifting resources away from policing and incarceration, and towards education, healthcare, housing, and other critical community needs. This role simultaneously focuses on supporting local campaigns while building a national field campaign and organizing programs to meet the goals of the Education and Justice Transformation program. 

This position will work alongside and in collaboration with the program’s other Co-Director who is responsible for leading the program’s education justice work.  

A strong candidate will have significant grassroots campaign experience and have managed policy and/or budgetary campaigns from start to finish -- including experience building broad multi-racial and multi-stakeholder support towards campaign victories. 

The ideal candidate will also have deep alignment with CPD/A’s theory of change, which focuses on building strong people’s institutions, working to support social justice movements, and facility moving between institution-building spaces and "movement moments." as well as fundraising experience

Primary Responsibilities

The Education and Justice Transformation Co-Director’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a national program that supports grassroots organizations across several jurisdictions to launch new or advance existing campaigns to defund the police, decriminalize communities of color, 
  • Building deep, close relationships with core CPD/A affiliates who are focused on driving racial justice and criminal legal system transformation work;
  • Providing ongoing strategic campaign and organizing support to affiliates and provide leadership for the program’s federal advocacy strategy;
  • Helping to coordinate efforts with CPD/A’s Base-building, Organizing, Digital, and Communications Teams;
  • Working closely within the broader education and justice transformation team, and other teams at CPD/A to coordinate campaign, policy, training, and research development needs and opportunities, including close coordination with program’s police-free schools campaigns;
  • Representing CPD/A and the network at key national spaces and tables;
  • Carrying responsibility, with staff from other senior CPD/A staff and CPD/A’s Development Department, to fundraise for the expansion and sustainability of the EJT program, including raising funds for the network and CPD’s affiliates.
  • Managing the EJT’s Policy and Campaign Manager and the Justice Transformation Organizer (to be hired). 

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice organizing, and fluency and understanding of the challenges facing Black and other communities of color, immigrant communities, and low-and moderate-income families;
  • About 12 years experience in progressive issue or budgetary campaigns, particularly at the local community level;
  • Strong progressive values, including a commitment to decarceration, with a fluency and understanding of the harms of policing, criminalization, and incarceration;
  • Experience and familiarity with digital and online campaign engagement; 
  • Comfort and flexibility in this challenging period of remote communication, coordination, and supervision;
  • Experience managing large programs and projects and working across departments or teams within an organization;
  • Success as independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners;
  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;
  • Experience raising resources from foundations and/or individual donors;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Results-focused and organized.

Salary and Benefits:

CPD/A is a unionized workplace. This is a supervisory position not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $95,000-110,000.

We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
