Chief Financial Officer 🔥


Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization, in conjunction with the Board of Directors and the finance, audit, and investment committees of the board. Additionally, this role will manage all human resources and operational elements of the organization, ensuring efficiency, compliance and the highest caliber work environment for CLF’s employees. The CFO will oversee all compliance and recognition for government and private grants. She or he must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace.

Responsibilities

Strategy:

  • Partner with the Executive Director on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior management team.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan, especially as the organization considers sponsorships, potential acquisitions, and collaborations with external entities.
  • Support on fundraising strategy where applicable.
  • Engage the board finance committee around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery.

Financial and Operational Management:

  • Oversee budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements, and Office of Management and Budget audit requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and CLF’s board of directors; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting. Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
  • Select and engage outside consultants (auditors, investment advisors).
  • Maintain internal control safeguards and coordinate all tax and audit activities.
  • Procure and manage necessary finance or CRM systems that meet the needs of the organization.
  • Optimize the handling of banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Track individual donations to CLF across platforms such as Paypal, Stripe etc.
  • Oversee all compliance and recognition for government and private grants.

Human Resources:

  • Evaluate and oversee all benefits negotiations and assess new benefit opportunities, thus providing the most competitive packages for CLF’s employees.
  • Review all HR-related procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.
  • Manage onboarding for new employees.
  • Work with CLF’s external HR consultants on any issues that may arise.

Operations:

  • Manage CLF’s state registrations through our external facilitating partner.
  • Manage any operational issues for the organization such as facilities, IT, hardware and any other operations issues that arise on an ongoing basis.
  • Research and support on Board and Advisory Board recruitment

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a leader with broad finance experience including accounting, gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. S/he will have experience managing the finance function (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting).

Experience

  • A minimum of a BS and CPA/CMA; an MBA would be a plus.
  • At least five years experience as CFO or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million.
  • A strong preference for someone who has operated in a fast-growing environment.
  • Deep understanding of and experience with Office of Management and Budget audits.
  • Past experience successfully managing critical financial management systems.
  • An effective communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information.
  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality.
  • Reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area
  • Ability to harness technology solutions in order to more quickly and efficiently communicate resources needed for key activities and performance against plans.
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with -- programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
