Since 1980, NAF has been partnering with high-need communities to improve outcomes for students by implementing NAF academies – small learning communities within existing high schools. NAF has grown from one NAF Academy of Finance in New York City to hundreds of academies across the country focusing on growing industries including: finance, hospitality & tourism, information technology, engineering, and health sciences. During the 2020-2021 school year, over 117,000 students attended 619 NAF academies across 37 states, plus DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. In 2020, NAF academies reported 99% of seniors graduated with 87% of graduates planning to go to college.
The Manager, Development plays an important role on NAF’s growing Institutional Advancement team, which is responsible for raising the funds to sustain NAF’s programs nationwide. The Manager’s primary function is to develop and write complex grant proposals and reports for corporate and foundation partners and prospects, supporting cultivation and stewardship efforts. The Manager will work closely with teams throughout NAF—including Marketing and Communications, the Office of the President, Programs, and Research and Tech—to build strong cases for funding. To advance fundraising goals tied to NAF’s new five-year strategic plan, the Manager will perform ongoing prospect research and outreach.
The Manager will confidently liaise with NAF stakeholders at all levels and exhibit excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills. Visual design skills are also important.
This role has historically been based at NAF’s headquarters in New York City. However, we will consider candidates from other geographies, as all NAF staff are working remotely until further notice.
Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:
Corporate and Foundation Relations (90%)
- Support the Institutional Advancement team in developing cases for funding NAF’s five-year strategic plan.
- In collaboration with Institutional Advancement colleagues and teams throughout NAF, develop grant proposals, concept papers, letters of inquiry and pitch decks.
- Monitor grant reporting deadlines and solicit information from NAF staff and partners to write comprehensive reports.
- Monitor the progress of NAF programs and initiatives, helping the Institutional Advancement team remain up to date.
- Prepare briefings and collateral materials to support NAF leadership in meetings with funders and prospects.
- Respond to funder inquiries and participate in calls and meetings.
- Support the Program team’s management of existing grants, ensuring pivots or challenges are communicated to funders.
- Collaborate with the Research and Tech team, developing strategies to communicate NAF’s impact and results to funders.
- Perform weekly prospect research, identifying funders aligned with NAF’s mission and presenting findings to the Institutional Advancement team.
- Recommend and execute strategies to initiate contact with prospects.
- Participate in introductory calls and meetings.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in nonprofit grant writing. Experience with corporate funding entities is a big plus.
- Experience designing visual reports and presentations.
- Experience researching funding prospects.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
