Policy Manager - Ocean and Watershed Conservation


Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN) is an award-winning ocean conservation nonprofit organization with offices in California and Texas. For 30 years, TIRN has led the grassroots fight against extinction locally, nationally and internationally. TIRN is seeking a full-time Policy Manager team member to join our fast-paced, innovative environmental organization and be a key part of our ocean and watershed conservation efforts.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Policy Manager designs and implements local, national and international policy strategies of the organization to uphold, increase and ensure the protection of endangered marine species and healthy ocean and watershed habitats. The position works closely with TIRN’s program, communication and development staff as well as pro bono attorneys and partnering organizations, coalitions and their legal teams to implement effective conservation strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with Executive Director, Managing Director and staff on long-range ocean and watershed planning
  • Responsible for policy planning, innovative strategies, and research on behalf of the organization. Requires familiarity with government programs and policies on local, state and national/or levels
  • Facilitates processes to determine priority issues, provides advice and strategy assistance to organization staff, and drafts written statements and comments on specific environmental policy issues
  • Provide reliable, timely analysis and strategic guidance on relevant legislative activities
  • Serve as a spokesperson for policy campaigns with decision-makers, the public, coalitions and media
  • Develop unique and diverse coalition of partners including NGOs, scientists and other stakeholders
  • Work with advocacy and communications staff to help develop and disseminate materials regarding legislative and policy developments to staff, national partners, policy makers and the media
  • Develop and advocate for specific policies to protect ocean wildlife – working with state and federal lawmakers to promote policies and introduce, promote and advance legislation
  • Collaborate with development and communications to craft messages for concept papers, letters of inquiry and funding proposals to foundations and donors

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • A degree in public policy, environmental science, management, law or equivalent experience
  • Highly motivated and able to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting legislative and regulatory language
  • Ability to build relationships with relevant policy partners (government, academic institutions, NGOs, etc.)
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral; experience as a public spokesperson and advocate; ability to research, analyze and articulate legal concepts and other complex issues and to communicate them to a variety of audiences; a “quick study” on a dynamic array of environmental issues
  • A commitment to ocean and wildlife protection

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to work occasional long hours, nights, and weekends as needed
  • Ability to be available via text, phone and Zoom to problem solve urgent concerns as they arise
