Job Summary:

The Program Coordinator is a historic preservationist who works as part of a team to coordinate and help provide technical assistance to congregations participating in the National Fund for Sacred Places [1] program (National Fund). The National Fund for Sacred Places is a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Through the National Fund, Partners for Sacred Places provides planning grants, technical assistance, and capacity-building support, while the National Trust provides preservation expertise and capital grants up to $250,000 to help congregations restore and preserve historic places of worship. The Program Coordinator helps to review applications and advise and support congregations within the National Fund program as they develop capital project plans.

The Program Coordinator is an excellent writer and editor who produces, for the Field Director’s review, informational content providing resources to congregations and partners working to preserve historic sacred sites, and shares success stories of congregations participating in the National Fund program, through blog posts, essays, issue briefs, case studies, webinars, conference sessions, and other communication platforms. This work requires the ability to relay preservation-related concepts and expectations in an engaging way to “non-preservationists”.

The Program Coordinator provides day-to-day programmatic and other support for the National Trust’s role in the National Fund for Sacred Places. The Program Coordinator also responds to inquiries from colleagues, partners, and the public regarding the National Fund, other National Trust programs, and historic preservation.

The Program Coordinator is teamwork oriented and actively collaborates with the National Fund team internally and externally, particularly Partners for Sacred Places, and with grantees, colleagues, partners, and allies.

Proximity to the National Trust's Washington, DC, headquarters or another Trust office is a plus, but flexibility to work remotely from any location will be considered based on strength of individual candidates. 

This a grant supported position currently funded for 2 years.  

Duties: 

Working with the National Fund team, and with review from the Field Director, the Program Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Providing technical assistance to congregations in the National Fund program – often to multiple congregations simultaneously.
  • Helping to advise and support congregations in the National Fund program as they develop their capital project plans.
  • Reviewing Letters of Intent and Applications to the National Fund program and making recommendations for selection of program participants.
  • Reviewing capital grant submissions and capital project plans to ensure compliance with Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
  • Participating, as part of a team, in site visits to congregations in the National Fund program to help ensure funded work complies with preservation standards .
  • Helping develop and produce content, for review by the Field Director, to share best practices and success stories of National Fund participants via various communications platforms,
  • Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the National Fund program and of other preservation-related programs of the National Trust.
  • Responding to inquiries about the National Fund by phone, email, and regular mail from National Trust colleagues, partners of the National Trust, and the general public. Provide resources, support, information, and referrals or elevate inquiries to other staff as appropriate.
  • Assisting with logistical management of the National Fund for Sacred Places program, including:
  • Maintaining files and sharing information about status of technical assistance provided to congregations in the program
  • Using, and helping to refine, program systems and processes for data tracking and information sharing with program partner Partners for Sacred Places
  • Participating in regular team meetings with Partners for Sacred Places and National Trust staff working on the National Fund program
  • The Program Coordinator will complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 3 years of professional level experience, particularly in a matrixed and geographically dispersed non-profit.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of historic preservation is required, particularly familiarity with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and preservation best practices.
  • Experience with project coordination, architectural design, and/or construction process is a plus.
  • Must be an excellent and persuasive writer, editor, and public speaker. Experience developing and disseminating informational and educational content.
  • Must be a well-organized, self-motivated team player.
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with colleagues, partners, and allies.

Pay & Benefits:

This is a full-time, non-exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits, and 3+ weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays. The position is currently grant funded for 2 years, with some possibility of extending if continued funding becomes available . 

Hiring Range: $26-29.00/hour (approximately $47-52,000 annualized based on 35 hours/week)
