Supervising Editor 🔥

Founded in 1981 in partnership with whistleblowers, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that works to expose waste, corruption, abuse of power, and when the government fails to serve the public or silences those who report wrongdoing. We champion reforms to achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles. POGO has an annual budget of more than $6 million, which supports a staff of over 40 employees.

POGO’s editorial team is looking for a talented Supervising Editor to manage and support POGO’s editorial review and fact checking processes. This includes supervising editorial staff and adding editing capacity on a variety of written products such as investigative pieces, policy analyses, public comments, testimony, newsletters, and emails to supporters. The Supervising Editor reports directly to POGO’s Director of Research.

We encourage potential applicants to apply even if they only have experience or familiarity in some of the areas described below. We fully recognize that many great candidates will not have experience in all of the areas we list, or may have relevant experiences and skills that we have not listed or considered.

Responsibilities include:

·      Oversee, manage, and facilitate POGO’s pipeline of written products to help ensure that accurate, timely, nonpartisan, grammatically correct, and compelling content is being consistently delivered (often on tight timelines)—including by effectively assigning editors, fact checkers, and proofreaders to review products; by collaborating with authors and directors to set priorities, manage timetables, and resolve challenges; and by providing direct editing and proofreading support as needed.

·      Supervise, guide, and support the professional development of POGO’s team of talented editors, fact checkers, and proofreaders.

·      Maintain POGO’s editorial calendar, editorial project board, internal style guide, editorial process guide, and other internal work products; and work with the Director of Research and other relevant stakeholders to update the written work products as necessary.

·      Run editorial board meetings (weekly) and team meetings (monthly) to facilitate the editorial process—liaising with other teams and attending brief all-staff check-in meetings (three times a week) to further that goal and provide any timely and relevant updates.

·      Work collaboratively with POGO’s analysts, investigators, researchers, and other teams (including communications) to help them consistently produce high-quality written products.

·      Review, assess, and give feedback on complex investigative findings and policy arguments to help synthesize, strengthen, and message them for general and target audiences.

·      Other duties as needed or required.

Qualifications include:

·      Minimum of 5 years of editing experience at similar-sized or larger organizations, and a particular interest in newsroom, investigations, and communications editing experience—or demonstrated equivalent experience.

·      Minimum of 3 years of experience managing a team—or demonstrated equivalent experience.

·      Demonstrated ability to coach writers and editors to help them produce their best work and achieve short- and long-term career goals.

·      Demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities and conditions.

·      Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

·      Exceptional attention to detail and high standards of accuracy and ethics.

·      Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work on internal teams, across departments, and independently when necessary.

·      Demonstrated commitment to working in a nonpartisan, collaborative, respectful manner with diverse stakeholders.

·      Demonstrated track record of taking initiative to solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances.

·      Strong understanding of content editing, fact checking, and proofreading best practices.

Compensation, benefits, and other information:

The job is full time and includes the listed benefits. This position is eligible for remote work, but otherwise the position and POGO are based in Washington, DC.

·      Competitive nonprofit salary starting at $79k.

·      Health, dental, and vision insurance.

·      403(b) employee investment plan available, with employer retirement contribution through a SEP IRA once eligible.

·      Life insurance and long-term disability coverage.

·      Metro SmartTrip benefits participation available.

·      Paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave.
